We have a winner.
The power zoom gears in an FA 28-80 zoom.
Gimmicky- yes. The power zoom feature wasn’t very useful, but it made good marketing copy.
I bought this lens broken ( zoom button missing, hazy optics) to harvest the power contacts since they are a direct replacement for SDM/DC/PLM contacts on modern Pentax lenses. Always smart to have a spare since Pentax doesn’t sell parts!

Wow! Didn't expect to be correct on this one. Wasn't one benefit with powerzoom that the lens retracted to it's shortest 'length' at power off? But OK, since no other manufacturers didn't follow up with similar patents, I guess it didn't catch on, so a bit gimmicky it was.

I had the 28-80 and 100-300 power zoom lenses with my Pz-1p back in the 1990s. The zoom action was slow, noisy and abrupt. The optics weren’t particularly good either. I quickly sold both and replaced them with a pair of Tokina AT-X Pro zooms.

I considered the power-zoom feature a gimmick from the outset, similar to the "panoramic" mode of some film-era cameras.. Nevertheless I bought a PZ body with the 28-80 and took some night images of Christmas lights with the auto-zoom feature which were interesting, but essentially novelty images. Once you've collected about five good images done that way, they become too obvious and boring. The technology used overwhelms the image.

Honestly, I'm still trying to decide if built-in metering is a gimmick! I've only been on the fence about it now for about fifty years. I still carry my array of trusty Gossens in my bags.

I was CERTAIN that auto-focus was a gimmick until I couldn't see well enough to critical-focus the rangefinder patch in my Leicas any more. Fortunately, the Nikon glass and bodies I replaced them with have sufficient focusing aids that I can still use manual focus lenses. But, yes, I do have AF lenses for my Phase One DF and my Nikon Df and I do use them for critical jobs. Of course, the secret is knowing exactly WHAT they're telling you they have focus lock ON. Hopefully it's what you want it to be on.

Thanks to a square deal from forum member filmfan, I was able to complete my Asahi Pentax K series camera set. I had the K2 and K1000, plus a non-functioning KX. My package from Canada arrived yesterday with fully functional, clean KM & KX bodies with SMC-M 50/2 lenses.
Photo taken with my K-r and Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28/3.5 screw mount lens.

Nope. My entire 1957-77 Asahi/Heiland/Honeywell Pentax collection is chrome. AP-S-K-H2-H1-H3-H3V-SP-SP1000-SP500-SPII-SPIIa-SP-F-ES and ESII All chrome. Black for any of the very early models is way beyond my spending level!

Attempt to paint it black yourself then send it to Ismael when you find you've made a boo-boo?

Nice!
I've been using the K2 and I love it. For some reason I prefer KM ovet KX. Maybe because it is closer to the K1000.
But we are both missing K2 DMD 😀

Thanks,

Thanks,
The K2DMD is too expensive for me to justify. I have a fairly complete 1957-77 collection. Missing the DMD and the meterless Spotmatic plus a couple of the low budget 1/500 models. I shot a roll of film with my K2 this summer. It needs the shutter speeds calibrated as it tended to overexpose. I think the KX will be the next film body to get a workout. I never cared for the K1000, in fact, I wouldn’t have one except a good friend gave me his. He hadn’t touched it in twenty years!

I really like my black K2. I've been looking for a black KX...
