Need help to fix my K2 DMD

Hi, I just registered on the forum and here is my first topic.

I have a K2DMD with various errors and I’m looking for help from you experts out there.

My Pentax kit: K2 DMD body, SMC1:1.8/55, 1:2/50 and 1:4/200 lenses, Motordrive MD + Battery Pack M

1. The camera fires regardless if there are batteries in it or not (2x SR44 just for testing). After a few shots the shutter gets stuck with the mirror up. The mirror is not stuck up there by any old foam, it seems like the whole sequence is interrupted by something else. When I tap it gentle under the left bottom side (seen from behind) it sometimes releases the shutter and completes the cycle. I don’t do this anymore as there are delicate PCB’s in there.

2. The ASA setting Dial moves freely, but moves out of setting as I move the aperture ring on the lens. Very annoying! I think this is caused by friction between the aperture sector and the ASA sector sliding against eachother in the camera body. Shouldn’t there be some kind of detent arrangement holding the ASA ring by “clicks”? I disassembled the whole bayonet assembly, but saw nothing wrong in there. There is a bronze sector with notches on the ASA dial, but it has nothing to work against (spring & ball or something like that).

3. The blue needle in the viewfinder does not match the actual setting on the speed dial. Where and how can this be adjusted?

4. When I removed the bottom cover and the battery compartment, I found a loose pink wire. It’s just that I can’t find where to re-solder it. Does anyone know? Where can I find schematics for the K2DMD?

Regards,
Peter

Yes, I got that one but it seems to differ from K2DMD info and quite frankly, I have a hard time understanding japanese manuals.

Well well, lets see who else can come up with some info...

You are very ambitious. I can't help specifically and I actually just sold mine since I had to send it for normal maintenance every two or three years, but ---

The ASA ring should have a rectangular black button on a silver colored post and associated detent mechanism near the base of the camera. Pressing the button allows the ASA ring to turn. When released a spring presses the button assembly out to the locked position. I can only assume there is some series of detents associated with that button assembly.

The ASA ring lubrication becomes sticky if not exercised frequently. When that happens the ASA ring and the ring for the Exposure Compensation both turn together, preventing the ASA from being changed. Ex. Comp must be set to zero to operate the ASA ring. Sounds like yours needs lubrication

Hope that helps some.

Thanks a lot for the answer,

Very interesting about the black button and it got me look more carefully at both my K2 DMD and at the K2 Service Manual's 1:st Exploded View.
I find my K2 DMD parts pretty much like those in the K2 SM as far as this assembly concerns. But I dont seem to have the button you are mentioning, part 0-A124 I presume,
since it is MISSING due to some earlier work on the camera! And this one sits rigth over the notched sector on the ASA ring!

The tiny cutaway in the lower side of the Ex. Comp ring must be for the missing button. I will dismantle again to re-check.

So for now it seems like I have to hunt down a 0-A124 button.

Stay tuned...

Some more pics just to confirm that I really need that elusive 0-A124 Button!

Bayonet mount removed. All other stuff still in Place The shutter and mirror are stuck in mid action. Have to fix that too!

Exp. Comp. Ring removed, ASA Ring in Place featuring notched detent sector. ASA Ring lock / release button 0-A124 is missing!
Should be at 5 o' clock position.

Both rings removed. The small tab at 3 o' clock position is the ASA input sector and is driven by the ASA ring. This one must be the only input into the "brain"

Will you please stop posting these scary pictures, I'm gonna have nightmares.

The only time I even glance at that hole is when I'm about to mount another lens.

Since I got somewhat stalled by the missing button, I decided to look closer at the sticking shutter.
I locked the mirror in the up position and simply sprayed Contact Cleaner in all edges of the shutter and also on all the shutter blades.
I swayed the camera around and fired the shutter several times while the fast drying liquid evaporated.
I did this 2-3 times and the problem went away. The shutter works and sounds great now.

Bu I got another problem instead:
Now, when I crank the lever to cock the shutter it often "slips back" before it gets cocked and I have to crank again one or more times before it stays cocked.
And when cocked, not fired, I can crank again (the arm does not get locked).
I there were film in it, it would have been ripped apart by now.

What cause this new problem?

Maybe you can mail that Eric guy for feedback? Home
Maybe Kameraservice i Kungsör can get parts for you but somehow I doubt it. Also L-Foto - Begagnatspecialisten seems to have repair parts.
