Bummer!: Super Program meter / LCD issue?

I've been using my dad's old super program for 20 years now without a problem. Recently the meter or LCD readout is acting oddly and now not metering properly it would seem.

The half-press no longer shows the metering info in the LCD windows. I can see the meter readings if I press the LCD backlight button so the meter and LCDs are actually working. I can see the meter info when I release the shutter as well. Seems to be a contact issue with the button. I have changed the batteries recently as well just in case this was a battery issue.

Not sure what to do. Is there anything I can try myself here.
I have other bodies now that I can use but this particular super program is dear to me.

I've never sent a camera in for a CLA and it seems not worth it financially to dump money into a Super Program..

Sounds like there are serious problems somewhere. You are correct that a repair will likely cost more than a replacement body.

Don't retire it, shutter half press contact failure is one of the most common failures on the Super Program with age, Eric can fix it as part of a CLA and it shouldn't need to be done again. Seems to just be from corrosion over time. Same thing happens with the light button and it will get flickery or not work at all but usually pressing harder will make that one work (its originally just a gentle press when new).
You could just get another off ebay but usually it will have or develop the same issue, better to just fix it.

Remove battery (batteries if stacked button cells). Using electronic contact cleaner work a single drop into the release button and another single drop along the backlight button shaft. As this cleaner is generally only available as a spray, you can spray a squirt on to wax paper to harvest a drop.

Install a fresh battery. This process won't hurt anything and may solve the problem. If it doesn't, you aren't out much money, but then do a professional CLA (clean, lubricate, adjust) as recommended.

Read the full thread. There is more going on here than bad shutter button.

Thanks guys..

Who is Eric?
I've seen his name mentioned in regards to CLA services but I'm not sure who/where he is and how I'd contact him..
if it's not a ridiculous amount I'd probably be game to send this body in, I'm oddly attached to it.

Eric Hendrickson is our preferred camera technician and manual film body repair specialist - really the best there is for Pentax bodies. The link takes you to his about page, but read the entire (brief) website. He just did a complete CLA and a few small repairs for about $80 shipped on a SuperProgram that I bought here (for $25). I swear, for $105 all-in it is a Like New camera!

If you invest the $13.50 to Priority Mail your camera to Eric he'll tell you how much he'd want to bring it back to working condition - no risk for the estimate beyond the $13.50 - and I think he'll ship it back comp as well if you refuse the estimate.

While I suffered from LX envy for many years, my Super Program was my joy until Ektachrome went away, including my big brick kept in a freezer. I wasn't a fan of either Kodachrome or Fujichrome, and certainly not color negative film. I sold my Super Program as a kit and set out to relearn SLR photography in the digital world. I still have a ways to go, but I'm getting there. If you are happy with your film stock, by all means do keep your Super Program in full working condition.
