They found his Remington - think it was a Remington - in a piano up in Tenterfield. I think. It was on the local news here when I was a kid. I dunno if it had his name engraved in it ("IF FOUND, PLEASE RETURN TO") or something. I dunno if the story was ever refuted, but it seems quaint.
I mean, I can well imagine him, shitfaced, having accidentally shot up a pub while drunk, cramming it into the piano before the cops came. You know, fair enough.
Lawson's drunkeness is what keeps him more in the background, behind Banjo Paterson, as well as his Marxist leanings. Still, I tend to like Banjo a bit more.
