Pentax k1000

Hello, I am totaly new in photography I just bring home Pentax K1000 with 50mm f/2 lens smc lens. Everything looks fine, no scratches, needle is ok. But I have almost clean focusing screen, the microprism is very barely visible. Its normal? Or camera is broken?

The K1000 was a very basic camera, as such it did not have much in the way of focus assistance. The SE model had a split focusing screen

Yes, this is normal. Some microprism screens have a fairly course pattern. Others less so. The one on the Spotmatic and K1000 is on the fine side and can be hard to use with some subjects (low contrast with little detail). In regards to split-image vs. microprism, both were common in SLR cameras going way back and the debate waged hot as to which was better. The short answer is that both are good, though in different ways. The combo split/microprism is a good compromise that was not common before the late 1970s.

The answer from a practical standpoint is to use the ground-glass donut (not the Fresnel field) portion of the screen when the microprism is not useful. It takes practice, but works well.

BTW...Welcome to the Pentax Forums!

Enjoy Your K-1000. It is a nice camera to learn on. I still have and occasionally use mine.

I assume when he said microprism he was referring to the donut and not the whole screen. On a K1000 its more of a dirt smudge than a viable focusing aid. The screen on my K1000 SE works OK up close or when zoomed in, thankfully all my zooms all seem to be parfocal so I can zoom in to focus and then zoom out without the focus point changing. I find if i focus to what I think is correct on the wide end of a zoom, and then zoom in it becomes clear that most of the time its wrong. My A50 1.4 seems to have a shallow enough DOF and is bright enough that focusing is much easier than with other things.
My Super Program definitely has a much better screen in it compared to the K1000.

Probably referring to the center microprism circle. Around the center microprism there is a ground glass matte ring (donut) with the remainder of the screen being a fine Fresnel field.

Welcome to the Forums. If the K1000 didn't come with the owner's manual, here it is online: http://www.lensinc.net/manuals/Pentax_K1000L.pdf. Reading this will help.
