Pentax MZ S Price speculation

Hello,

Since the K3 has been announced, my ebay newsletter keeps hitting me with `found matches for MZ S` . I guess people started saving for the new camera.
Today I' ve got a hit for another copy at the price of about 600$ , as it is `mint` .
People, seriously now: I consider 300$ for a SH MZ S camera too much, regardless the fact that it was the `big thing` of Pentax cameras, but 600+ $ seems a ripoff.
This sort of speculation make good cameras inaccessible for the `newbies` like myself.
It' s not the `thing` anymore, let it go at a decent price people! It isn' t gold so it' s value is bound to decrease.

The link

All the best!

I'm not an expert on the MZ "S"...Just that it's the "last of the line" etc, Pentax film camera.
However, this one has the optional "battery pack" does it not, & looks to be virtually new. There are people like me who will pay a premium for equipment in mint condition, just as I have with my Pentax SMC M42 gear,.....not that it works any better than "average" stuff of course,...I just like it.
So I reckon that this MZS will sell pretty quickly?
Cheers, Pickles.

I've followed Pentax film camera pricing fairly closely for a few years now. I wanted a MZ-S for quite awhile and ended up buying one through the forum.
MZ-S prices have been extremely consistent for the most part. On the high end, they're often listed at $600+ and on the lower end they're usually over $300.
I've rarely seen a non-broken one listed under $300.
I think the actual value is somewhere between the $300-$600 range, depending on condition of course.

The big variable in the linked camera is the battery grip, which is VERY tough to find. It also has the strap but those are pretty common. The camera isn't actually Mint, merely Excellent+. If it was actually NIB the camera alone might be $600 -$700 (or more) and the grip is a Bidding War.

I paid $375 here for a perfectly functional MZ-S with virtually no handling marks but clearly used and $26 for the correct paper manual separately. I waited three years for that price.

As to the Original poster's comments.

The MZ-S has never been cheap.
Even brand new, they were never discounted.

As for the used market they hover in the $500-600 dollar range, and have been for years.

It's why Pentax is "Pentax" and those of us that have been here for a long time understand.
Pretty much everything Pentax holds it's value.
It's a good/sad reality.

If you think the MZ-S holds it's value, what say you about the K1000?
K1000 cameras are still worth north of $100-150 and they have been out of production for almost a generation!

My MZ-S bought a couple of years ago has sure held it's value a lot better than my K-5 (from $1,500 to $500) and my K-x (from $600 to $250).

My MZ-S will be worth more than a K-3 within 2 years.

Depends on the condition and where you are buying it. Shopgoodwill.com has dozens of K1000s up for auction at any given time and most sell for less than $70. I just paid $73.87 for one after shipping, but that had an M35/2.8 attached to it. KMs & KXs usually sell for even less.

The only way a K1000 should sell for more than $100 is if it has just had a CLA.

Condition and accessories are key and no doubt what the market will bear. You don't have to have one so you can certainly just pass it by.

K1000s are typically way over-priced (about 2x what they should be for a particular market). That is why I usually tell people to find a good KX, KM, or Spotmatic II and spend the difference on a lenses.
