Which budget AF SLR would you recommend?

I want as low cost an AF SLR I can muster as an alternative to my ME Super. I found a Z-70 for about $30 on ebay and there is currently a ZX-60 for $35 here through the board. These seem about the same to me but checking for opinions/insights/suggestions before I pull the trigger... Ideally, the experience would be an improvement from ME Super where I am not enjoying the manual focusing very much and am missing quite a few shots because of it. I only get through a roll every month or two or three, so I can't justify spending much more than this range.... Is there a model I can find that is superior to these if I hold out and keep my eye out? Or are they all about the same?

Don't forget that you need all new lenses with AF capability as well. The MF lenses you currently use on your ME Super won't autofocus just because you get an AF body.

I have a MZ-50 that lets me control aperture from the body so I can fully use DA lenses! But donīt but this body.. Buy a lens you like and the body probably comes attached to it. F35-70 comes to mind

Don't neglect shopgoodwill.com. There is a ZX-50 with a FA28-200 with no bids, a ZX-7 with 28-80 with no bids, PZ-10 with no bids, etc.

There's an intriguing one, ZX-30...but crippled K-mount.

Then you can safely disregard my comment...

Thanks for this. Could be the way to go if I can remember to check these auctions at the right time... I am usually a 'buy it now' type. Hard to be ready to go at 6pm three days from now lol...

I was really happy with my ZX-7 when I was shooting film. I might be willing to swap it for a new lens.

Pentax Z1p/PZ1p all the way. Only! The best AF camera that I ever had. From simpler once I liked Pentax Z50p and Pentax MZ5N/ZX5N ( while I had them ).

I have a MZ5n however I bought a MZ7 so I could use it with my "digital' lenses. I paid 50 for it and two lenses. I thnk the P series were more robust than the MZ/ZX series but never tried them. I started with the Sf1n and like the MZ5n much better. Good luck on your search.

Be aware that the MZ/ZX camera models have a fatal flaw, a plastic gear that drives everything, which will eventually break.

The best AF film SLR Pentax made was the Z-1(p), whether it's a 'budget' choice depends on your point of view but they're very cheap compared to when they were new. The only other experience* I have is with the SFX(n), which is fairly basic but very well built.

* I'm lying as I also have an MEF & 35-70 AF lens, but I guess you don't want one of those!

One of the factor to consider is the lens support. You might want to consider the Z-20 as well. It's one of the few bodies can meter with all lenses. K, F, DA no problem. It's got all the fancy hyper modes too. The only downside is that the pentamirror is not that great. Not an issue though if you just use autofocus lenses most of the time.

Check this site. Choose the camera that gives M, Av, P, Tv exposure control and you're good to go!

True, though mine never did while I had it. And, nowadays, being able to pick one up at around $30 makes that not too much an issue. I'd recommend the ZX-M - cheap as chips on the bay if you're just looking for budget but still able to perform quite well.

... Edit: except the OP specifically specified and cheap AF cam, which that is not which renders most of this post of mine irrelevant. Move along.
