Check the winder is mounted flat.

I find when mounting the winder MEII onto my ME that it can sometimes sit slightly skewed if I'm not careful to centre it.

Make sure the winder is mounted dead square with the body, on my ME I seem to recall there's a slight raised bit that needs to line up with the edge of the body, otherwise it can make it sit proud.
Wiggle the winder a bit, if it's not square on it should move closer into the body as you wiggle.

The other possibility is that the springs in the winder's teeth thingy aren't pushing the teeth up enough to grab the camera's drive.

On the contrary, I found that I need to mount slightly skewed in order for the coupler to fully engage! If it's flat, they won't engage and the motor just buzzes on. I just can't see anything wrong with either the camera or the winder. I guees probably they were not really made for each other.

I found it disappointing that the winder won't power the camera. But hey, the sound is really cool!

Too bad. The camera and grip were often sold together and I believe the Winder MEII* was intended primarily for the A series cameras with backward compatibility to M series bodies. You did remove the shallow grip from the front of the camera, right? Mine fits easily with that grip removed. With the grip on, I get the same symptoms as you.

Steve

* The main feature difference between the Winder ME and the Winder MEII is that the MEII makes provision for proper operation with the OTF TTL feature of the Program Plus. I believe the Winder MEII debuted with the A-series bodies.
