K1000 Light Meter Repair

I have a Pentax K1000 that was my father's, and then mine. About 8 years ago the light meter broke (not the batteries, or a dirt issue) - it's stuck up at the + side whether there are batteries in it or not. I took it to a local camera shot yesterday and they said I should just buy a new body for $85 rather than repair the light meter because the parts were hard to find. I just wondered if that was good advice, or if I should look for another repair store, or go back and insist?

Thanks for any help!

Since you have inherited the camera it must be an older, pre-plastic era model, and could be worth repairing if otherwise in good condition.

Eric has done a great job repairing Pentax stuff for many of our members, highly recommended.

The camera obviously has sentimental value to you which would equate to a desire to repair rather than replace.

Consider sending the camera to Eric Hendrickson in the US. He charges $63.00 plus parts and shipping for a K1000. He should have the parts otherwise you can pick one up cheap enough used as a donor.

Parts should be readily available, given the number of these things about. If it's otherwise functional then it's well worth having it CLAd.

If you are in the UK try Robin at Harrow Technical.

Any old film camera will likely need some servicing. There is no guarentee that a different K1000 won't develop faults in due course. Given the sentimental attachment I'd get it repaired by one of the specialists we have mentioned.
