What did you find are the shortcomings in the recommended zooms?

So much for a zoom.

I found an irresistible deal on a real clean A50/2.8 Macro lens.
It can replace my wife's M50/1.7, her usual walkaround lens.
The fixed focal length will be less complicated to operate.
I'm confident she will use it enough to justify the additional cost.

Thanks all for your suggestions and other input.

Chris
Very nice lens the 50. Better than the 35-70 for macro, but that's a great lens too for the added zoom function. Congrats!

The recommended zooms are all good. I have owned a couple of them myself.
But in my experience a fixed focal length lens is usually preferable, when practical.
This is probably particularly true in the case of a macro lens.

I agree that primes are generally better then even the best zoom lenses even in my experience with Canon's "L" zooms.

But it is not preferable in this case since you specifically asked for a small walkaround zoom 105mm or less with decent macro function.

No problem as I was just curious if you knew something about these suggested zooms that may have detracted from your initial request.

Of course it is preferable in this case, since her usual walkaround lens is a 50mm.

I suggested the short zoom knowing the price would be lower, to test the waters.
Then I happened upon this A50/2.8, which from all accounts is a cracker of a lens.
A change yes, but far from a compromise for sure. So all's well that ends well...

My favorite

I would recommend the A-SMC 35-70 F/4 SMC Pentax-A 35-70mm F4 Reviews - A Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

It is a very nice, small, sharp, lens with good macro capability. It is what I usually put on my KX. Don't confuse it with the F/3.5- version which is no where near as good optically.

The A 50/2.8 macro arrived yesterday. It looks like new but has a slightly sticky diaphragm.
My wife wants to keep it. Seller will give a partial refund to cover most of cost of repair by Eric.
