Not sure why it is, but in my experience buying and selling lenses, I see the 1.4 at least twice as often as the 1.8.

The M 1.7, which perhaps you are thinking of, is very common, as is the Takumar 1.8. None of the K series lenses are particularly common (to say nothing of incredibly so), as they were superseded by their M equivalents only a year after they were introduced, and the latter were produced several years thereafter and were the lenses (notably the 50mm f/2 and f/1.7) that were most often sold on the K series bodies, including the blockbuster K1000 for most of its run.

To put it in perspective, there is one Pentax-k 55mm f1.8 currently for sale on U.S. ebay. There are about 200 of the M 1.7.

The K55/1.8 is incredibly common and was the lens more commonly sold with the K-series cameras as a kit. The f/1.4 was an additional cost option.

And just to add, since I was curious, there are 3 50mm 1.4 SMC-Ks and 5 1.2s. Probably not so surprising, since the k 1.2 wasn't superseded until the A version came out, so it might actually be more common than either of the slower k normal primes.

I’ve found the K55/2 to be the hardest to find, since it was only sold with the original 1976 K1000 body in a kit. The K55/2 was also only in production for a little over a year.

Here is the Nov 1975 Modern Photo mag review of the three 50mm lenses as a point of reference but of course these lenses are used and no guarantee of their performance.
...and people wonder why I consistently recommend the 55/1.8 over the 50/1.4.
