HELP - K1000 with self timer

I received in the mail a K1000 from an eBay buy - you know a stock standard original K1000 with the serial number on the top plate and original SMC Pentax 55mm f2 mounted in excellent condition .... right? Wrong.

I pulled it out and smiled ....... meter works, condition great, seals even OK.

Then I noticed something not quite right. What the heck, a self timer (and NO depth of field button). Just the self timer ....... WHAT!

I have an early production K1000 with a self timer. Has anyone seen one of these?

Possibly very late production:

Can you post a pic?

Yes I will post a pic.

According to the production dates / serial number pdf, it appears this camera was produced in 1976-78 (serial = 7589806)

This has me seriously confused. I am about to take the top cover off to see if it has pre or post 1980 circuitry

Very unique K1000 you have there. A pre-production prototype possibly? The top cover is the earliest style and the lens, SMC(K)55mm/2.0, is from the 1st k1000 series.
My 1st thought was that maybe it is a KM that had a damaged top cover replaced with a K1000 cover. But, a KM would also have a DoF button above the self-timer lever.
Does the 'self-timer' work?

the real kicker is this, the camera came with, what appears to be, the original kit lens - the SMC Pentax 55mm f2 (K series)........ making me think this thing is the real deal.

yes the self timer works - the meter does too. standard needle meter - no LED lights as is the case with latter 'post pentax' K1000 productions in china (e.g. Mingca bodies)

Interesting! Looks like a KM/K1000 combo.

Email Eric maybe he might know, he has probably worked on every film camera that Pentax made.

Could be some regional dealer/distributor option like the K1000SE?????

Does the camera have a split screen?

No it does not have a split screen

It looks like the only variation is the timer. But, in saying that, I have to comment on the responsiveness of the meter. It might be a better meter sourced from one of the better brothters?

Maybe. It was bought from a person in France if that helps this thought.

There were a lot of "variations/modifications" of the K1000 over the years, so nothing surprises me.

Never the less you have a good looking camera/lens combo!

Phil.
