Real version or pimped?

Hi

This has been on fleeBay a long time. Do any one know if this is genuine or is it pimped up?

VERY RARE LIMITED ASHAI PENTAX 14K GOLD PLATED S2 & S2 SUPER 35mm SLR CAMERAS

I have limited knowledge about special versions of M42-era cameras, but based on the pictures I'd guess the gold plating isn't authentic.

At least he's honest about the mechanical condition! That's more than you get from a lot of ebay sellers!

Whether factory-origin or pimped, they certainly look grand. He doesn't claim at any time that they are factory originals, just rare finds from his collection. If I had money to burn I'd get them, and then I'd fly Eric and all his gear over to do a private CLA while I watched the master at work.

They look so very fake and I have never seen a genuine one being sold without the accessories.

I asked a long time ago and he said they are gold. They do not look like the golden spotmatic, though.
Gold Spotmatic ?
I am not saying he is lying but to me they are black bodies with the black paint removed.

That was my initial thought as well. It would explain both what looks like scratches to the finish in some shots, caused by rubbing off the paint with something abrasive, and the number of spots where the engraved lettering looks to be filled with white paint. (With exceptions, like the "AOC" logo, that were still filled in black on black bodies.)

Special editions usually had special cases & accessories, right? My husband's car was a 2010 Lancer Evolution Special Edition. Shortly after buying it, he received a letter in the mail from Mitsubishi Japan with a numbered key fob & letter with his car's description & placement in the production line. I think his was something like 261 of 300 & one of only 60 in his color.

That sort of detail & accessories are pretty customary for special editions of some products.

The gold Spotmatic is legit, the S2 not likely.

The same seller has also listed the rare SB SB2 and the H2 with Store Demonstrator for sale. And I've been following his sale for half a year, none of these have been picked up yet.

He writes that he has been collecting Pentax for 40 years and that he knows the value of the items for sale. But none is sold. Isn't an items value equal to what the market will pay?

I have no reason to doubt his competence and honesty , but it makes me wounder.

Real or genuine, I cannot even approach being able to fathom anyone wanting to have, let alone pay for a camera that looks like that.

If you want a special Pentax, look for the gold-plated, leather covered LX. Good luck on having the $$ for one. And if you get one, keep white gloves handy in case a friend wants to hold it.

The LX is hot in its original color, black. It would, in my opinion, be madness to shell out such money for something like a gold Pentax.
