Yes, KR-5 Super2 will operate at all speeds 1 sec to 1/2000th without batteries.
The batteries provide a "match-the-led" metering with 3 leds +<0>-.
The camera has an iso dial but no EV compensation

I have the MX and the Ricoh on my desk here. The viewfinder size difference is hardly noticable, even with both cameras in hand.
However the MX has a brighter viewfinder.

I got this Ricoh about 20 years ago in a pawn shop in Melbourne and it has done a lot of miles and rolls.

I think so.

I am heading out to Australia and Taiwan for 3 weeks .
Last 3 trips I was lucky to be able to carry on a medium format camera and check the clothes etc as baggage.
This trip I have tight connections in Narita and Hong Kong, so it will be carry on only with clothes for 4 days, summer in Australia and winter in Taipei.

So,
Ricoh KR-5 Super2
SMC Pentax -M 1:2.8 40 mm
Vivitar 28mm 1:2.0 MC Close Focus Wide Angle
Pentax AF160 Flash
Kodak C41 iso 400 24 exp-loose
Fuji C41 iso 200 24 exp- loaded.

Camera batteries and flash batteries are all tested and 1,6 V +
The vintage AF160 flash tests in A mode 4 metre with excellent histogram on the Pentax K-01

It all fits in the small "Pentax" soft holster (with the lenses capped).
Less than 1.2 kg total.

Recently there was a pile of snow in Taipei, in the not very high areas.

Watch out for the carry on allowances in Australia. For Occupational Safety reasons all the airlines officially state 7.5kg limit for the carry on (and standard carry on maximum size, not the oversize ones many people take in US), and it is not unusual for them to weight it at the check in counter. If they do that they will probably let you take 10kg and tell you off a little. The other hassle of taking only carry on is it restricts what you can take to fit the security for carry on.

If they let you book the tight connections they must have been longer than the official minimum connection time. In Asia they ground crew seem capable of getting transfers done without problems in the rated minimum time for the airport. (That is unless you have booked with the low cost airlines that do not support through check-in.

No doubt there are some factors that may influence the differences such as whether or not you wear glasses and lens perspective. How much of an advantage this is also another matter altogether.

Hi Les, over past year I have had interocular lenses ( new "rear cells" ) implanted in my eyes.
What a difference ! I can focus cameras and read vernier calipers again like a 20 year old.

So every viewfinder is A+ for me now.

My most loved 35mm film camera is not the MX, not the Super-Program, PZ-1p or the P3 that I tried and owned for a short time. It is with Ricoh xr-p

After leaving it sitting idle for the last 2.5 years, its mirror is now jamming frequently in a stuck up position. I hope I manage to open up the two mirror pieces and glue them back properly. It will be very sad to see my good friend retiring from action.

My Ricoh xr7 got it as a replacement for a Mamiya zm which was destroyed, chosen over Yashica fx3 and Pentax me super ,to this day it's never let me down.

My first SLR was a Ricoh KR 5. As basic as it gets, but does the job. I still have it. Also picked up a KR 5 Super at Goodwill for $6 with a 50mm F2 "P" lens.

I carried my original XR7 for many miles of wilderness travel for over 25 years until I managed to damage the lens coupling with a defective lens. That was a sad day, though I kept the body for parts and now have two more replacements

Great cameras when new and still an excellent value in traditional K-mount.

I have two Ricoh XR-m's. I got one in 1990 and one in 1991 in anticipation of a five week family trip out west. Great grip. Neat little flash and reliable.
