Some great suggestions here, sorry I haven't had the time to reply to more.

I found a camera! Not my first choice, but the price is right. A Canon sure shot. Takes two easily replaceable AA batteries, easily pocket-able, auto exposure, good focal length (38mm). It was donated by my Mom, who has very thoroughly transitioned to digital and thought it was a fitting last mission for the sure shot. I'm firing a roll of kentmere 100 through it to test it out, it seems to be in good working order, if reeking of mothballs.

Not so fast, buster. You are going to visit your friend, who will get you access to all the good arctic aviation subjects with your camera(s) and film(s) of choice, and you will post the results back here.

No bloody excuses. (but yeah, give her the sure shot, whatever)

:-) I definitely will visit her some day... at which point, most definitely yes to all demands above!

In the meantime, I'll try to keep this thread alive if she gets some good photos with this camera and she's ok with me posting them up.

The little rollei 35's were used on a lot of Everest expeditions. I'd guess that's a good indicator they can handle the cold.
+1

In the early 1980s I was a Special Forces Team Leader for a mountain team based in Bad Tolz Germany (1st BN 10th SFG). I took a little Rollie 35 LED with me to the mountains (Alps) when it was very cold and the the only issue with the pictures had to do with the operator, not the camera . I also took my Pentax SL which performed flawlessly in the cold but depending on what we were doing usually was in my rucksack until needed. The Rollei 35 LED was dummy corded to my gear harness and was always available. Great little camera.

Nice area of Germany. Visited the Durnbach War Cemetery a few years back, which is near Bad Tolz.

Phil,

Very nice cemetery. Well kept. We used to have an annual ceremony remembering all the war dead there. Now that Flint Kaserne is closed I don't know if the the 10th still visits it.

Bob,
If your friend happens to be in Yellowknife, or on the highway to Yellowknife, or even working in the diamond mines North of Yellowknife. I may be able to deliver her a Vivitar (made by Casio) SLR in person. It would need a battery. I used it 2 years ago in the far North, and it worked fine. However the film didn't advance properly for me once, so I lost faith in it after loosing some wolf shots from 10 feet away.
I think that I have a 28mm lens on it, plus I believe that I have a 135mm that would fit too. It's a M42 mount.

I use my Yashica 35GSN out and about in Fairbanks winters, which have been pleasantly mild and not much below 0F this year. Had some problems with the YashicaMat 120's shutter jamming in the -20's but fine once it warmed back up. My ZX-7 and DA40 limited combo works well too.

But honestly, the SureShot is probably the best kind of camera for the job described! If you think the AF will be nice in winter, wait till summer and the mosquitos come out...
