Pentax ZX-50 Shutter problems

Hello, hopefully someone can help me;

I'm a photography major and a film SLR camera was required for a Black and White Photography class. My father had given me his Pentax ZX-50 that looked to be in perfect condition from what my professor had seen. When I had bought batteries for the camera for some reason it had read that they were dying (probably because of the cold) but the shutter wouldn't go off, nor would the flash. The camera turns on and we can change the shutter speeds and aperture but the camera won't take a photograph. Would that have anything to do with the batteries being almost dead, or would the camera still go off even if they were?

Thanks!

I believe you need to load film in this camera in order to cock the shutter as everything is motor driven. If there isn't enough power from the batteries the motors will not operate.

This model camera is prone to mirror lock due to breakage of the plastic gears used on the motors. There is no simple fix for this other than replacing the gear. Another common problem is the pivot on the flash will break and the flash will no longer popup on its own.

If the mirror is locked up you will not be able to see through the viewfinder.

Warm the batteries up to room temperatures, load a roll of film and it should work unless the mirror locks up after a shot.

Okay the shutter works now that I replaced the battery but even when I turn off the camera it's still running, probably why the batteries died without me using it. I loaded film in and when I went to change the settings I noticed the shutter was going off. When I looked it said my roll of film was used up but I never hit the shutter. Is that another problem the ZX-50 has?

I couldn't say if that is a common problem or not. If the motor gears are cracked and slipping the mechanism won't cycle through properly and any number of things can happen. With mine the mirror locked up and the motor continues to run since the gears aren't turning to complete the cycles.

It could be you had the shooting mode set to motor drive and the shutter button got stuck or the load cycle didn't complete because of gear slippage and it just kept loading winding the film.
