Pentax AP prototype

Reading on the net I found this article regarding the prototype of the LX:

AOHC - Asahi Optical Historical Club: Special Pentax LX variations

Does anybody have more info on this "AP" camera? Perhaps it's old news to somebody on this board.

Eeek!

You should have included a warning that the linked page included pictures of the infamous LX Gold model.

Interesting, I've not heard of it before.

Funny I also discovered this other 'AP Prototype' today...

That was already discussed, the Spotmatic like digital camera that should have gone in production and never was.

This beast:

Is completely new to me...and it's even more interesting to read they started developing the LX in 1975 as soon as the K series was out.

One of many Pentax prototypes that never made it into production, is my guess.

My favourite prototype, excluding the M35/1.4, is the Pentax Bird's-Eye lens:

K 8.4/2.8 Bird's-Eye

How does the bird's eye projection differ from a fisheye?

That front element bears a striking resemblance to the lenses for Theta

The Birds-eye is a circular fish-eye, while the traditional Pentax fish-eye is a full frame (24x36mm) one.

I found this in a Japanese book called 'Classic Pentax'. Here's a rough translation:

The far right example is the first prototype. Before they started to use computers to design cameras, they used to make wooden samples based on the designer's sketches. The other two are to the final prototypes and the final LX body was made based on these two samples. Until they named it "LX" it was called "AP" (Asashi Pentax). The pentaprism part of middle sample was used to design K2DMD as well.

They spent a long time and made so many samples to decide the final shape of the body. After all, they finally decided to take the one on the top.

Hope that helps.

I always thought that Pentax reached back to their original Asahi Pentax when they designed the LX . . . perfection!
