Light meter issues with Pentax ME

So my Pentax ME is acting weird. Well, the light meter. Under bright light, it appears to function okay, and it meters like it should, as the scene becomes darker, the light meter goes off the correct reading. At one point, what would be a 1/60ths with 200iso and f1.7, is metered as underexposed. I can't figure out why, because even under very good indoor lighting, it still meters as underexposed. It shoots up to 1/1000ths and overexposed when exposed to bright light. Also, the fact that the meter is center-weighted is highlighted, because a lightbulb on the center of the scene would meter as 1/1000ths and when moved to the side of the screen,it would meter as under-exposed. Advice would be really appreciated. Thank you.

I have had a number of these models by Pentax. I started having the same issues you are having to contend with. Having taken it to an authorized Pentax service center, it was discovered that the meter was malfunctioning because the photo cells were deteriorating. I decided to hand it over to the service center for parts. With old film SLRs, it is difficult to locate parts and the price of replacement/repair is not cost effective. I hated to part with it, but there was no choice. I hope this helps.

Oh. *sniff sniff* I feel like crying. I guess I'll have to hunt for a parts ME. Thanks. Does anyone know how the photocells take their reading on this camera?

Sorry, I know nothing about photocells, but I use a light meter (Sekonic L758DR) There are old one's which can be obtained for very little, and even some models of the Sekonic for less than $200. I just got my ME Super back from Eric a month ago. It's usually spot on with what the ME Super meter shows, but I love the Sekonic for the ability to change setting on the fly, and then change them on the ME. I have the K1000, ME Super, K20D, K5, K-3ll & the new full frame K-1. I use it with all of my camera's.

I have an old ME as well and I'm having a similar problem. I really like the size of the ME. I wish there was a way to use an external light meter with the ME but I don't believe it will do you any good. But I'm no expert by any means so if someone knows better I'd also like to hear it. Man I like the feel of that little ME. Anyway, have a good day.

Not easily. Since the ME only has one "manual" shutter speed of 1/100x, you would have to pick the aperture the hand held light meter chose just under 1/125th of a second.

It is common for cameras with CdS photocells to underexpose in dim light as the cells deteriorate from moisture, but the ME used a Gallium photo diode instead. I don't believe GPDs have such degradation. However, meters typically have linearity adjustments to set exposure over the light range, and if the ME has pots for linearity, they could be affected by aging.
I bought an ME when they first came out, and sold it when I got an LX, but picked up another a few years ago, and it still seems fine.
Chances are good the Eric could fix it reasonably.
