Perhaps it is a specific combination of lens and focusing screen, maybe the obstruction due to the viewfinder magnification or maybe even your sight is giving you issues?

I looked through both of my MX's with my 50mm f1.2 and 40mm f2.8 pointed to a very bright sky and I can see the LEDs just fine. The slower lens is a little easier to see then the faster lens.
