*ist shutter won't fire

I recently bought an *ist film camera, and everything works *except* the shutter won't fire. It will work with the remote, and I can even get the shutter button to work if I hold the button on the remote down half-way. Similar problem were reported here a while ago:

It seems like perhaps the issue is in the plug for the remote, if holding the remote down halfway lets the shutter button fire. Anyone have any experience with this issue and a fix? If there isn't something relatively easy (or cheap) I will return it to the seller.

My guess is that the shutter button itself is faulty, if the camera works fine with the remote.

It's a common issue on digital Canon Rebels (XT, XTi, XSi in particular) where the little click pad on the circuit board beneath the shutter button plunger wears out.

Of course, it's easier to scrounge parts for those than the short-lived *ist.
