As we see already, you'll have as many film recommendations and preferences as photographers. That said, though I don't personally shoot it very often at all, I too would recommened Portra400 as a very good film that can tackle basically any color task. It isn't my favorite but it's one of the most forgiving color films. You can shoot it any where from +4 to -2 stops and have perfectly usable images. A roll or two of slide film would be great in that environment but your exposure must be bang-on.

Dump the AE-1, get one of these, and 30-40 rolls of Kodak ultramax 400, imo.
