Kodak Ektachrome 35mm is coming back

Apologies if someone already posted. Great to hear that Kodak is bringing Ektachrome back!

In a super shocking announcement being made today at CES 2017, Kodak is bringing back one of their iconic films: Kodak Ektachrome 100. The announcement goes hand in hand with the emulsion being available in both Super 8 and 35mm still formats.

You made my day, I would give you 50 "likes" if I could!

Best news I have heard in years film wise. My freezer will be full after it comes out.

Thanks for posting!

Phil.

Come on Pentax, you can do it - dig that plant out of China and go one more run of the good old K1000 to honour the resurgence of film.

That is great news for film photographers.

Now, if they'd just bring back Kodachrome...

I know, it ain't gonna happen.

I was just thinking there's been uncharacteristicly little talk of CES here . . .

MZ-S | FA Limiteds and a new (to me) Contax RX.

* plus a drawer full of manual film cameras . . . .

2016 was sadly the first year since 1980 that I didn't shoot a single roll of film, because I've always preferred slides and I just didn't like any of the few options that were still available. The return of Ektachrome is absolutely fantastic news, and hopefully it will bring millions of others like me back to the form of photography that we first fell in love with.

Leica, Nikon, and Voigtlander continue to produce new 35mm film cameras. The F6 is really the pinnacle of 35mm FSLR cameras and arguably the M7 for rangefinders. The Nikon F6 was the last released FSLR in 2004 and the Leica M-A type 127 was the last rangefinder in 2014.

If they could still source the differential galvo a new K1000 would be expensive, for the hand assembly, but slides are best with an incident dome so any old S1a, SV etc are ok and cheap.

I've already got three.

Great news if true. Or is it April 1st?

Now if only my Pakon scanner could handle mounted slides...

The problem with Kodachrome is it would require a complete reconstruction of the specialized labs needed to carry out its extremely complicated development process. I had a family friend give me an old Olympus PEN half frame rangefinder few years back that happened to contain an exposed roll of Kodachrome from when he was a soldier in the Vietnam War. It was really a shame, since the last of the Kodachrome labs had just shut down a couple of months before. The film can be developed as black and white, but I think he is still patiently waiting to see if anyone ever manages to replicate the process so he can get them developed in color.
There's a process to do it now...

If the home brewers can do it, surely a larger lab...

They might not be able to make more of the film, but a pathway to development could at least be offered while stock still remained.
