Recently picked up an ME f...

Yesterday I picked up a box of pentax gear. Included were a couple of lenses that I'm pretty sure are shot, and an ME F. I don't know a whole lot about the Fs, i actually hadn't even heard of this model until i owned it. But it has a couple issues i want to look into fixing to see if its worth it

First issue is, the shutter is locked closed, is it safe to assume, or at least start with the assumption that it is an electronically controlled shutter and it is just due to dead batteries?

Second, the mirror seems to be in the up/locked position. I don't think or I didn't see a mirror lock up option on the camera, and if i fold the mirror down using the little lever inside of the body (a small tab, in front of the mirror on the left if you have the lens off) it will stay down, and flip up when i depress the shutter button. This one is one that i have no clue about.

Any tips would be appreciated

That sounds like a stripped shutter box to me.
Pretty cool camera. Did it come with any auto focus lenses?
As far as fixing it yourself; throw a couple batteries in it and see what happens.
I'm not sure you want to actually get inside a camera like this. They're fiendishly complicated!
Here's a video by Mike Trost showing a best case scenario that you could hopefully correct.

Good luck with it!

Nothing will happen. Stuck mirror and stuck winder is a classic ME-series problem, which may have several reasons, the one in the video being one of them. Another source of information is this: Favorite Classics > Pentax ME Super Ramblings > Three Common Failure ProblemsDIY repair is possible but difficult.

Thanks for the heads up there. That looks a little beyond what I want to get myself into. I guess for now it will just take a spot on my shelf next to my MG and my K1000
