Neither, I don't like soft releases and I'm not a fan of Lapel pins. Lets just say I'm giving it the Dada treatment, everything is useless.
Then it's an objet d'art, and even I can appreciate it for that

I've owned a couple and used them.

Past tense intended.

I found I lost them as quickly as I bought them.

However, I may buy one for my Lomo LCA-120. I like the camera but I absolutely hate the shutter release because it is so stiff and hard to press. Who knows, maybe a soft release will help smooth it out a bit.

Not wanting to take things off-topic, I'd love to get your thoughts (perhaps by PM?) on that LCA-120 Probably not a cool thing to admit on these forums, but I've long been a fan of the original 35mm LC-A... I own an old GOST-calibrated Russian model, and a slightly later export model with ISO film ratings. Super little cameras, and the Minitar lens is fantastic (for all its quirkiness!)

I had one for my Nikon F. They were popular for use with that model and cost about $1.99 IIRC.
I soon discarded it. I have never been interested in a soft release for any camera I owned since.

however my experience doesn't reflect this, if anything soft releases get in the way of the tactile feedback you get from a mechanical shutter.
+1 on this. Once you have any "muscle memory" for partially depressing the shutter release (to activate the light meter or AF), I find a soft release makes this control more difficult.

The only benefit that Iʻve found in the field was on a film SLR in cold wet weather. To a tiny degree, it reduces a bit of moisture entering from the shutter release button and itʻs easier to activate the shutter with gloves on.

At the end of the day, itʻs subjective and Iʻm sure anyone using one for a long time swears by them and would be remiss not having it.

So... you're on the fence, then, Matt?

Yes, more research is necessary. I think I'll try continuing to ignore them and see how that goes.

I think that's pretty much the classic use-case for these
Yep. I shot a roll or two without it and found I frequently had camera shake even at 1/100, so I then went looking for one that wasn't too expensive (and would match the camera. )
