B&H Article on the Pentax K-1000

This caught my eye in B&H's regular newsletter:

I really wish I'd kept one. I owned one, for years, and then used it as the mainstay of my photggraphy course for another 15. It was a sad day when Pentax stopped shipping them to school boards etc. I still have my old ME though.

I just took delivery of my fifth (I think it's five, I have four others in the database anyway) today. This one is my first SE, though it isn't marked SE...I guess some just had a sticker that said SE, and this one doesn't have it...

Good stuff, the K1000 and Spotmatic are the Pentax cameras that will live on as legends!

I've been to LIC the last couple times that I have been to NYC and it's a great area to shoot.

I bought my 1st K1000 in 1977, my 1st SLR. It was stolen in 1986
My 2nd K1000 was stolen in 1989

I still have at least one though
Actually, I lost count. I collect K1000s lately.
And, I use them once in a while, too.

I still have a nice K1000, but honestly there were other cameras of the era that IMHO were even better. Think KM, KX, K2 or even the K1000 SE had the benefits of the K1000, but a bit more useful features. And then of course there was the LX. The class of the K series was the KX. What I didn't like about the K1000 was I didn't like the focus screen (improved in the K1000 SE), no timer (got a screw in one into the shutter release), and, most important, no way to stop the lens down to see what was in focus save to loosen the lens a bit and let the blades close. I still have the camera though for research purposes.

On my rangefinder and scale/zone focus cameras I have no such choice, but
using an SLR I rely on DOF preview, so the K1000 is a non-starter for me.
I do use the otherwise nearly identical Pentax KM, which has DOF preview.

If you are content to use the DOF scale on each lens the K1000 is a good choice.
As they say better is the enemy of good. The K1000 is the simple "light tight box".
