Pretty much any camera made in the '70s or '80s is going to need new foam. My Sears TLS has black dots in the viewfinder because the previous owner used it with a bad mirror bumper...

I found a place that will replace the seals for $39 including return shipping, I think that I'm going to send them my black ME at least...
I know of a place that for only about twice that price will replace the foams AND do a full CLA to bring the camera back to its full functioning condition for many years to come. Foam relpacement is truly about a $10 job. $39 is highway robbery.

Well the second link does a repair and CLA for $45 to $50 plus $8 shipping...

But only for the K1000, Spotmatic, ME / ME Super, A3000, and K2...

For $65 they'll fix a ZX series camera...

I really should have Eric do my LX while he still can...

Eric replaced seals and foam on my working Sears KS1000, a rebranded Ricoh XR-1s.

I got it mostly for nostalgia. This model was my first K-mount camera,
the same as the used one also purchased on eBay in the late 1990's.

You can also use one of Jon Goodman's excellent kits. I believe he still charges $10, shipping included.

Favorite Classics / Jon Goodman's Seal Replacement Instructions

His kits are good but scissors, double sided pressure sensitive tape and ex mouse mat foam is all I use!

So I have two excellent all-manual film cameras, An Asahi Pentax K1000, and a Ricoh KR-5 Super. I'm starting to collect too many cameras, so I was figuring I would sell one and keep the other.

Feature-wise, the only real differences are:
  • The Ricoh has the light meter switched by the wind lever, as opposed to the always-on K1000 light meter
  • The Ricoh has a self timer, the K1000 does not
  • The Ricoh has a metal focal plane shutter, the K1000 a rubberized cloth shutter
  • The Ricoh has a flash-sync speed of 125, the K1000 has 60
  • The K1000 can take alkaline LR44 batteries, the Ricoh only mentions SR44 silver-oxide batteries in the manual
Going just on features, the Ricoh does seem to win, but there's something about the K1000 that just feels better.

So, which would you get rid of?
The K1000 has an automatic switch, the meter turns off in gbag, ERC, or lens cap. The meter cn use a fresh alkaline cell but will misbehave when it reaches end of life! Hearing aid battery will do as well!

I'd keep both, and if I mainly liked using one over the other, I'd put a body cap on the less liked one, wrap it in some bubble wrap, and store it as a back up. It wouldn't take up much more room than a pound of hamburger in your dresser's sock drawer. Anybody ever store hamburger in you sock drawer before?

A Sears KS1000 was also my first K-mount body.

Considering I have a Minolta SRT-101 on the way (mainly because I miss the one I had), I think I'll be selling the Ricoh.
