Well, I am looking for advice which correction lens to buy for film SLRs. Want to look through the VF without glasses.

I am short-sighted and have -1.25 on my right eye, which I use for focussing. I know I need additional -1 correction. Experience with Fuji GW690 III. Standard eyepiece has -1. I excahnged it with a -2 on the camera and everything is sharp. So I need an additional -1.

Does anybody knows what the standard correction of the SLR viewfinders is? I would need that information for the Super A, and the (P)Z-20 series

For example, I look through the VF and see the image blurry. For the Super A, the manual says, -1.1 on the diopter, but that one, if detachable, was missing on mine (bougth used). So, should I go for a -1 or a -2 correction? If the VF itself is -1.1, a -1 correction would work.

For the Z-20, manual says -1 VF, there is no detachable diopter, so I assume I would be fine with a -1 correction.

Thanks!

The diopter is built-in (no stock removable diopter lens included). The "native" correction would be as stated in the manual. The PZ/MZ/ZX might have a removable eyecup stock but that's it, no removable diopter included.

If the viewfinders are sharp while you are wearing your corrective lenses then you would need around -1.25 diopter for it to be sharp without your eyeglasses/contact lenses.

I have a PZ-1p and am about +2 in the other direction. The PZ-1p accommodates that, so I would think it should work for you in the opposite direction. Some users just leave their glasses on (I use mine with my sunglasses on all the time), since the PZ-1p viewfinder has good eye relief. In that case, just dial in the point where the viewfinder image guides (not the image) are the sharpest (with your eyeglasses on). It can be disconcerting though if you forget your eyeglasses and wonder why your camera won't focus properly on anything One advantage of using it with eyeglasses is that problems like astigmatism can be overcome since your prescription addressed that in the eyeglass correction.

Z20 has no adjustment and certainly not Super A.
It may be a little difficult to find an M correction lens, look at dealers that have used equipment.
I think they exist throughout the steps (-1, -2, -3).
You can try L-foto in Sweden: L-Foto - Begagnatspecialisten push Pentax PK, then down to "Diverse " and "Korrektionslins M -1 , -2 , -3 , -5 (B+) 125:-/st" (~11€).
But you must mail, He´s old.

Thanks a lot, so I would go for -1 correction attachments.

I find it a bit difficult to look through a VF with glasses on. I cant see the whole frame so I prefer doing without glasses. Its a bit of a pity that only the LX/Z1 have adjustable diopters. Cant find a nice Z1(p) or LX at the moment and prices are going north, too.

Anyway, as long as correcton pieces are around, I'm good.

Be sure to get one marked ‘ M ‘ - the older adapters for the ‘ S ‘ (K1000 and earlier) body cameras won’t fit.

buy cheap glasses online with plastic lenses, take the lens out and using a dremel or similar tool trim the lens down to fit in the viewfinder. Its what i did with my HC-2 prism for my Hasselblad.

Generally on cameras with no diopter adjustment it's around -1, but varies slightly between model. (example KX is -0.8 and the Super A -1.1)

You need a viewfinder correction lens. Try the marketplace and used camera places. They replace the viewfinder eye cup with one that has a correction lens in it. If you find one, you can have a lens ground to fit as one person mentioned above. The advantage to the cup replacement is that the correction is instantly removable if someone else has to use the camera.s mentioned above, the M series viewfinder cups fit all the K mount camera models.

The ‘ M ‘ eyecup will be loose on the K2, K2DMD, KX, KM and K1000.

Yeah, I see some M eyecups around on ebay. Maybe I try to order one through a shop, though (I like to buy new Pentax stuff). Dont know if they are still available. I think I get from ebay...

Dremel is not my first choice. I'd probably dremel my fingers off...

Phil.
From an eye correction point of view is this correction for sphere or cylinder?

This is topical for me as I now have a Super A and love it, and similar to the OP have -1.25 sphere and -1.75 cylinder on my right eye. If the camera is already -1.1 I have nothing to correct?, in truth I have not found I have a problem but was considering an M-2 diopter
Is there a resource I can read up on this?

Thanks

The viewfinder attachment size on Pentax SLR and DSLR cameras has been the same since the M series. There were/are two solutions for correction lenses: the "stand-alone" M correction lenses pictured here: PENTAX Diopter Correction Lens Adapter M reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database which can't be combined with an eyecup. Then there's the eyecup (don't know the exact name) that takes the round 67 correction lenses (the eyecup is currently offered here PENTAX eye cup MII 30087 Japan | eBay). The 67 correction lenses might be more difficult to find. In any case if you need a total correction of -2 you want a -1 correction lens, unlike Nikon's nomenclature which gives the total correction amount including the viewfinder.

wkraus, Thanks, I have read the reviews on diopters, I was just surprised to find -1 correction built in. That would seem to mean someone with perfect eyesight would need a correction diopter, bizarre.

Not at all. Manufacturers did this for good reason.

Studies show that most people do not have "perfect" eyesight and are in fact slightly nearsighted.
About -1.0 is just about right for most.
