Rare gold SLR made by the company that would become the new owners:

Seems strange that the budget brand Ricoh would have a gold edition of a camera.

It is a rather odd industry standard. I appreciate the desire to celebrate an anniversary with something special, but
those gold cameras look so incredibly gaudy to my eye. Hope we something a little more tasteful than a gold K-1 for
the 100th anniversary of Asahi.

Every time I see that gold LX, this is how my mind interprets it.

I have two black ones. Good in their day. I have not put a roll of film through them for some time. I suppose they still work but one has a sticky mirror and the batteries are not all that cheap.

It has a matte finish rather than the mirror finish that the Pentax gold editions. A budget gold finish.

Forget gold editions, there should be copper editions. Not necessarily the metal itself, but the color and shine would be cooler-looking than gold.

Regardless, it's always seemed strange to me to make a camera that you are so hesitant to use because it cost so much.

This camera would have posed a challenge for Ricoh back then.

The LX had metal covers, and would naturally have been easier to gold plate. Aluminum lens barrels - yeah, that's harder to do.

But the Ricoh had plastic top and bottom covers (due to the need for sharp angles and steps). Ricoh kept the XR series in basic black plastic finish. Canon used plastic on the AE-1, but copper plated the polycarbonate, and then chromed it (or painted it black for the black versions). A lot of people were fooled into thinking AE-1's had metal tops. It was pretty convincing.

Even Minolta, for their X-700, copper plated the polycarbonate top and bottoms, and then black enameled them - because it looked and felt classier than .... well, something like the Ricohs.

So, unless this XR-P is finished in a gold paint, they would have had to plate over the plastic. Not something found on their usual production line.

Not sure it's to my taste either, but it is interesting, to be sure.

The nicest Pentax is probably K3 prestige edition.

Special gold camera editions date back to the 1920s when Leica produced some "Luxus" models of the original model 1 (or A in the US).Gold plating instead of black paint on the covers, and lizard skin for leather.

It might be a bit on the heavy side.
