Something different - Pentax K100

Found this Pentax oddity while searching ebay for film cameras located in Canada - the Pentax K100
It’s on auction from Henry’s Camera in Toronto. Starting bid USD $499.95

I can imagine that stranger things have passed through quality control checks! Henry’s doesn’t explain it nor does google provide any information. Are there any other known Pentax oddities out there?

PENTAX K100 35MM SLR FILM CAMERA W/SMC 50MM F2 LENS/NOT K1000!/USED/VINTAGE | eBay

INCLUDED ITEMS:
Pentax K100 35mm Film SLR Camera Body
SMC Pentax-M 50mm f2 lens
Front Lens Cap

CONDITION:
Here is a rare opportunity to own something rather unusual to say the least! Yes, this body is engraved K100, and NOT K1000.
It is in good used condition with normal light signs of wear. There are a few light scuffs and a bit of finish wear to the exterior. The satin chromed brass covers do seem to have a bit of light pitting in the chrome, but the body still looks good overall. We did notice that the shutter curtains do not open all the way across at the 1/1000 of a second setting, which is quite normal for this type of shutter considering its age. All the other speeds appear to be alright. Otherwise it appears to be in good working order. Due to the vintage nature of the item, we are selling it as is without our usual warranty.
Serial Number range: 62241XX.

cheers
Greg

Perhaps 2 of a kind?
Too bad the older post doesn’t show its serial number to compare. I see the lens serial numbers are different for the same lens type. One fluke sure, but two?

Depending on how the top cover is made, it might be more likely for there to be a repeated error than a single-camera error.

It seems very odd that such an error would make it through manufacturing, QC, distribution and retail without being noticed, not to mention the initial purchaser taking one look at their sparkling new 'K1000' and sending it back...

Very interesting!

*edit* Reminds me of a 'Notc Nikkor' that Japan Camera Hunter had listed at one point.

A photographer named David Hancock mentioned in one of his recent videos that one of his rarest cameras is a "K100"

Thanks for sharing this link, it appears there are at least two known K100 cameras out there.

The camera is still on auction (for buyers in Canada/US).

A decade ago a seller on eBay offered K1000 bodies painted khaki green.
In hindsight I wish I had bought one.
