It depends on whether you want automation or not, along with many other parameters such as weight, reliability and shutter speeds. For example, I tend to avoid automated film cameras and much prefer a MX over an ME or even my LX. "Best" has no meaning without a context.

K1000 You could bang nails with them!

K1000 Very Well Made, Dependable, and versatile. I used them for Commercial work back in the 80's including Aerial photography with Ektar 125. I kept the 4 loaded with different types of Film. I used the K1000 quite a bit for Multiple Exposurers on slide film for slide show presentations.
They were all sold 3 years ago and I hope still functioning today .

Technically the 'best' 35mm was the Z-1(p) - fastest shutter & x-sync, double dial interface. The Super-A with a Motordrive-A is the slickest manual focus body, but my preference is the LX - it's in a different class, all of the controls are much more refined than anything else. Ultimately though, the P6x7 is the best film SLR.

I agree that what may be best for one may not be the best for another.

However, if interchangeable viewfinders are a primary requirement then the LX may be best.

If having the ability to aperture autoexpose a scene for as long as it takes - even hours long, is a primary requirement, then the LX may be the best.

Best at image quality or convenience? IQ would be Pentax's medium format SLRs, of course.

K-2DMD. I used it as my primary camera for 15 years.

Yours looks a lot better than mine; I used to say she was my primary camera for eleven years, but recently I redid the arithmetic and discovered I used her for 149 months - which is over twelve years.

She never had a special grip, winder or data back.
Her strap broke, so I substituted one from a purse my wife had "retired"
Then one of the anchors holding the strap on broke., but she kept giving me photos
Then the knob from the ASA selector broke
Finally I moved her to "emeritus" status, and I use her only on rare occasion

I've only had the experience of a couple Pentax SLR's, the K1000 and SF10. I always seem to fall back to the K1000, just a solid camera.

Not the best AF, though.

Well, I guess this answer is fairly easy for me by virtue of the film cameras I kept after going digital. They are the LX, K2, and 6x7. And what I love about the 6x7 is that with a converter that I have, I can use my 6x7 lenses on any SLR I have film or digital, APS-C or full frame. No other camera company can say that from entirely within its own system.

I heartily agree with 1-4. After that, it doesn't really matter.
