They are indeed going up. I missed the boat on one with a 40mm pancake on the forums here for I think it was about a hundred bucks about six months ago. It was already sold by the time I inquired, but the guy was selling another one with a 28 for 80$.

Mighty Mike is currently selling a working MX missing the power winder door for 78$ US, not a bad deal tbh, about what a decent K1000 will run.
I just sold my very nice, working MX with a 50mm f1.7 SMC M for $95 shipped.

Going on my observations over the last decade, and the price tracking on PF (Pentax MX - Pentax Manual Focus Film SLRs - Pentax Camera Reviews and Specifications), MX prices haven't being going up at all. If anything they've had a gradual, long-term downward trend. When I first got into Pentax 35mm (which would have been around 2008) I expected to pay about $150 for a clean MX.
From 1998 Until 2005 or 2006 I traded Pentax bodies and lenses on eBay. I often bought a camera or camera lot to get the lenses, replaced the foam and sold the camera and maybe the lenses separately if I didn’t need them. I got most of my (nearly complete) K lens collection that way.

From my old records the clearing price for a clean chrome MX was $229 and black was +$40 If you could find one. KX was $169 +$20 for black. K2 was $229 - $249. LX was $400+ and often you didn’t get a grip, lugs or strap, and only an FA-1 Finder. Clean, working Japan or Hong Kong K1000’s have been $100 - $125 for 20 years, +$60 with a recent CLA.

All but the LX were priced above with a M50/2 and ER case. A wag once posted here that every M50/2 ever made had changed hands on eBay by 2006. At one point I sent 17 M50/2’s to KEH for $10 a piece.

And I bought a very nice MX with SMC-M 50/1.7 for $95 shipped.

MightyMike also has a couple of MXs for sale in the classifieds for the Canadian equivalent of US$80. They are far more reasonably priced cameras than the LX (which is a great camera, I’m sure, but a lot more money.)

The thing with K1000 is a great example of what Internet hype can do. A little more capable camera, KM costs less than K1000. Other examples of such mistreat are Canon AE-1 (versus a much better canon A-1), Olympus Mju and countless other point-and-shoots.

I think we should be thankful though because actual good cameras aren't glorified and can be bought at a fair price.

True, the K1000 was only a KM with the self-timer and DoF lever removed*. However there is the point that a K1000 is likely to be newer than a KM (or KX, K2 or even an M-series), as KMs ceased production in 1976 while K1000s were made until ~1996. Having said that, later K1000s were not of the original high quality, and most buyers are unaware of the age of what they are buying anyway.

* And some other minor differences.

Ineed you have a point there, which I nearly forgot - if something I buy is only 20-25 years old, it will theoretically last longer than something twice that age.

I am not sure how long they were meant to last, but my rejuvenated original AP seems as good as the day it was made.

In the late 90s I was getting MX bodies on ebay for $60-$80 regularly. Not mint, but good working users. I had my first MX in 1980 I bought used at a local camera store and paid $125 for the body only. At the time a new body was $185 or so. This can still be done... today I just missed an MX with 1.7 and winder in eBay for $96. It just not as common at that price ..maybe 1 a week I see. When you look on eBay these says...most clean MXs are $150 to $250 with or without a lens. This opinion is based on my 20+ years on eBay and 30+ years as a Pentax owner

Congrats! I was bidding on that one too. It was a deal at that price for sure.

I think that you are referring to a different camera. I sold mine in the classifieds here in the forums.

I recently found a deal on eBay I couldn't pass. A black K2 with lens and flash. The photo's weren't the greatest, so I ended up paying $40. The surprise was when it made it to my door, everything looks nearly new, there isn't a scratch on the camera or lens, and the old Vivitar flash had working batteries.

Now I've been trying to find a silver one to go with it, but I was ruined by that price...

Nice pick-up! It's much harder to find great bargains like this than it used to be.

That's the main reason for me to pick a KM over a K1000, all KM's have a great solid build and only the early K1000's do. There is a big difference between an early MIJ K1000 and one of the last MIC ones.

Blame the cronut-eating latte-sipping hipster crowd. In all seriousness: I suspect the resurrection of ektachrome would have something to do with it.
