I have both the K1000 and the KX. I think, as has been expressed here, that the vast number of K1000s out there has led to its general recommendation as an ideal beginner's camera. Strange are the ways of the market! I scored an immaculate KX adorned with the f1.4 50mm for just over $100! IMO the KX is a far better introduction to film than the K1000. It has full exposure info in the viewfinder, depth of field preview, mirror lockup - good for long exposures, and meter on/off. Pity there was no winder available. But since "everyone" has heard of the K1000 it has become the choice for many photography classes. And so it goes....

No winder for the KX but there was a motor drive available for the MD version as there was for the KM. But good luck finding one. lol

I just received a Nikon FM that doesn't need a CLA from Seattle Goodwill. $94 after shipping, very happy at that price...

That is an excellent price! Did it come attached to a lens?

Just an E series 50/1.8. But I see those selling for $40 and up on eBay...

Nikon prices are kind of crazy compared to Pentax prices. I see EMs sell for more than $100...

Agreed. I have long wanted an FM2, but the body cost has continued to be out-of-reach regardless of condition.

Last time I checked the Nikon FM is still a bargain.

I owned and used Nikon FM, FE, FM2n and FE models.
IMO build quality is a bit better on the earlier FM/FE.

FWIW using normal speed films I seldom needed the higher shutter speeds on my FM2n and FE2...

Original FE seems to be an even better buy. The FE loses the 3 red LED dots,
adds needle and bar on a scale for aperture priority AE or manual exposure,
much like K2DMD; it even has ADR to show selected aperture in viewfinder.

Other nice features are AE memory lock, user interchangeable focusing screens,
mirror prefire with self-timer, and 3.5 fps motor capability with MD-11 or MD-12.

FE and FE2 have electronic shutters and are battery-dependent.
The Nikon DB-2 remote battery pack fits these and other models.

Which is why I bought a FM. I'm concentrating mostly on all mechanical SLRs at the moment. I want cameras that will work even if the electronics die...

I've got plenty of Pentax Ks and Spotmatics...I have 2 Konica Autoreflex, a Minolta SR-T, 2 Zenit, Praktica, Sears TLS & Tower 37A, Ihagee Exa, Topcon Super RE, Ricoh XR-2 & a couple Cosina made cameras.

I think my next two will be an Olympus OM-1 & a Canon FTb...

All good choices and also still bargains. I too prefer mechanical cameras.

But absent an Eric Hendrickson for the other brands they are all pretty much
disposable. Fortunately at current prices they can be considered as such.

The FE is miles ahead of the FM in features. It's like a K2DMD, only more refined.
I sold off my Nikon FM, FM2n and FE2 bodies. I still own 2 FEs, silver and black.

I’ve fooled around with an F1a and FE2 but neither inspired me. They’re both on the way out.

I would classify John Hermanson as the Olympus counterpart to Eric -> Camtech Photo Services and I have used his service too.
