Greg Weber is the Eric of Konica...

I have used both of the aforementioned specialist repairers.
They are nowhere near Eric Hendrickson by any measure.

What are you going to do when Eric finally call it quits, or dies?

All my Pentax cameras have already been serviced by Eric.
The question is what will you do?

That has quite a lot to do with why my final goal is CLA’ed K1000 Japan | K1000 SE | KX | MX | LX for film (and that’s more than I really want). All the other cameras will go away and the m42 lenses will be significantly reduced. AFA digital, Pentax FF and a select set of F, FA and D FA lenses will be more than enough.

There are a surprising number of camera repair shops. Maybe they aren't the exalted Eric Hendrickson, but you will probably get a working camera back...and with less of a backlog than Eric seems to be running these days.

The K1000 was popular and still is because it was so simple and dependable. You did have to know light & exposure though no free rides. That's why it was used in teaching so much. The only auto was the light meter and it was bang on. I used 4 of them commercially back in the 80's ;that was my auto ISO. A long with my Bronika ETR and ME Super with winder which didn't see much action especially when Ektar 125 film came out. I used them for Commercial , Industrial , Aerial , Weddings and Portraiture shooting. You could bang nails with them. I dropped my Bronika in a church wedding one time and it cost me $400.00 in 1980 $$$$ that never happened with the K1000, I kept them in the trunk of my car a lot of the time. It was especially good for multiple exposures because it was so well built that I used in slide presentations. I Finally sold my guys a couple of years ago and I trust that they are still banging away. Average price $70 USD.

There are about a dozen on eBay for £232 from the same seller in Australia (KX's at similar prices too) - all apparently serviced by Eric - healthy prices indeed if they sell. Somebody's got a production line going and buying up bodies. I can imagine if you're away from a known good repair shop, getting one already CLA'd makes sense and there are those out there that may want an 'as new' camera without the hassle of sending it out for repair (possibly oversees with customs to deal with along the way). The patina gives them even more credibility than a spotless body.

KX's & KM's are better cameras, but they don't get the 'hipster' spotlight treatment, why buy one if you're after that recognition when you can get a K1000? The differences are mainly technical and not significant for 80% of most peoples needs. Many of is on this forum have expressed a preference for a new Pentax film camera, if manufactured it would cost way more than even these prices (they're similar to the new price from around 1986) - if they have had a good service by an expert, they're worth the money to some people (you would expect almost mechanical perfection though).

All the interest in K1000's has to be good for Pentax/Ricoh - they should try and leverage some of it in a marketing campaign some how.

How about Pentax building in firmware that has the camera emulate a K1000? A K1000 Mode on the menu? All you get is a simulated needle swinging up and down on the right-hand side and that is it, or turn on other parts of the readout selectively? Should not be too hard to do and it would use all existing hardware...Its a thought...

  • Rear LCD off except for ISO (no live view)
  • No instant review or playback modes
  • AF off (no focus confirm)
  • Center-weighted meter only
  • M mode only, metering accomplished using hobbled EV scale (only shows +/- 1 stop from center with accuracy) in optical viewfinder
  • Simulated ISO 32-3200 (S/N ratio approximates grain...not sure how to bias sensor response at low end)
  • Fixed ISO per card
  • Maximum 36 exposures per card
  • Single frame drive mode only with exposures gated to 1.5 fps maximum.
  • No P-TTL
  • Hobbled meter range to EV100 3-18
  • 1/60s Flash sync
  • 1s - 1/1000s shutter speeds only (full stop increments)
  • Battery goes dead if lens cap is left off
  • K1000 mode selectable through mode dial only and when enabled, all menu and almost all buttons disabled.
Truth be told, such a mode would result in a camera somewhat heavier, bulkier, and not as good at manual focus as the real thing.

@ stevebrot
You forgot :-
  • No self timer
  • Slow light meter reaction

But can't nearly all that be done with existing DSLR settings, a legacy manual lens, and a bit of self-discipline?
