K2 Shutter problem - is it a common problem?

Hi All, my K2 has a shutter problem, it fires, but always at one speed (auto & manual) - I presume it's the mechanical sync speed - the metering works fine.

Having spoken to Harrow Technical in the UK, it sounds like the shutter is faulty and therefore is not repairable. I'm tempted to buy another if I can find one at the right price, but would like to know whether this is likely to be a common problem?

Thanks,

John.

My two K2's and two K2DMD's have not had this issue, sticky/stuck ASA ring yes.

I've had something close but not entirely similar: my shutter failed in the same manner, but the metering also stopped working. In my case it was likely one of the circuit boards that went.

Had this with one of my K2's, Paul at Advance Camera found some corrosion on one of the boards. Replaced it, no problems now, works great. Since I'd had CLA'd within a year (their warranty) was just charged for the part.

I bought a K2DMD with a stuck shutter "for spares or repair" and Eric managed to fix it up nicely. Run perfectly since then... I don't know the specific problem though.

Without power, the shutter only fires at 1/125. It could be a wiring corrosion or circuit board problem.

Thanks all, it's not something I'm going to look at repairing - shame as it's an almost immaculate black body and the metering works perfectly (auto & manual). I will run some film through it to see if works at 1/125th. I might look for another, but I'm tempted to stick with a KX.

How were you gauging shutter speed? Does that mean when in aperture priority mode and the K2's meter determines a shutter speed of 8 seconds (something obvious) that it doesn't actually take an 8 second exposure?

I also have a perfectly functioning K2 bought with unknown background.

Yes, if in Auto and displaying a longish shutter speed it always shoots fast, the same applies in manual where I can select any speed. I wasn't sure until an earlier post if the mechanical speed was 1/125th or 1/1000th - speeds from the sync speed upwards should all sound the same as only the 'slit width' is changing. B is also mechanical as that works fine.

Find a beat-up but working one and get someone to fix the good looking one? Mostly, "unrepairable" translates into "no spares available".

1/1000, 1/125 and B. It's also in the owner's manual.

No the manual says just 1/125 and B, not 1/1000.

The K2 is odd in this respect, in that unlike most other electronic cameras that Pentax produced it does in fact have 2 mechanical speeds. You can spot it on page 4 of the manual, which corresponds to page 7 of the PDF over on butkus:
"Manual mechanical shutter: B, 1/125 and 1/1000. (when battery is dead.)"

Remarkable! I checked the Dutch veersion manual and it says B and 1/125, both on pages 4 and 14! I have this camera, but never tested it.
