For Canadians looking for a film/slide scanner

I went to Vistek today to check out film/slide scanners. The one I was interested in was sold but I walked out with an Epson V500 scanner.

The price has just come down recently (again!): $120, less $20 in-store instant rebate (until Sept 30), less $50 mail-in rebate (until Oct 30) = net price $150 before taxes.

A month ago this was selling for $250 less $50 mail-in rebate = $200.

I figured at this price I'm not taking on much risk. The store manager had previously encouraged me to consider the V500 after I explained my needs to him. He had used this unit personally and was quite impressed with the results. The reviews I've read on the 'net are also pretty positive.

how would this compare to something like a Nikon Coolscan 3000?

I recently bought one from vistek, too. Pretty decent deal on a good scanner. I had to pay shipping so it was a bit more. Still haven't received my $50 rebate.

Sorry, I can't help. The Coolscan 3000 is no longer produced so I don't know anything about it.
