Strap stud question..what holds it in?

I cant figure out what is supposed to hold the strap stud into the camera body on an ME Super. It was a little loose, and I twisted it and it pulled right out. I was expecting it to be threaded, but it is not.

It pushes back in, but it doesn't stay in. How can I make it stay in?

Looks like you sheared it off, so it isn't going to go back. Is that an internal pin you've cut in half?

Beats me. I just twisted it with hand pressure and pulled. It came right out. I thought maybe it was screwed in, but nope. I've never had one come out before.

So,,,now what are my options? Get a small loop wrist strap for the other side, and forget about the side with the hole?

As I recall, most strap lugs just slip straight into the hole, and a small screw is threaded into a cross-hole through the shaft of the lug from above, before the top plate is installed. Looks like the small retaining screw sheared off, with the end of it visible in the side of the lug shaft.

How would a person go about fixing it?

On a Samsung NX300 with a similar problem the solution was to dismantle and reinstall from the inside before reassembling.

From the ME Super service manual the strap hook on that side is held in with part #23900-C81 Strap Hook Retainer. The strap hook, part #23900-O-A6 on the other side is held in place with a black nickel plated M1.7 × 5 screw (designated CNS 1.7 × 5, I have no idea what the difference is between CSS, CNS, CNM and CNM-L screws are).

How to repair? Either get a replacement O-A6 or remove the bit of the retainer screw by drilling out or using a screw extractor. Obtain a replacement C81. Remove the top cover and replace the parts.

Or for a non-reversible repair glue the strap hook in with a epoxy resin. Something like JB Weld.

Source the parts from a dead M series camera. Let me go check my spares and see what I have.

If you cannot get that fixed in a reasonable way or at reasonable cost, consider one of the Arca-Swiss style base plates that have a mechanism for attaching a shoulder or neck strap. Some have an easy on-off mechanism, most have a simple but extremely solid metal loop that accommodates a strap. Seems odd to have the camera dangling upside-down, but obviously many photographers not only adjust but prefer that orientation. It's a matter of getting into the habit of holding your hand differently when you reach for the camera.

I might try JB Weld and see how that goes. Or just a wrist strap. I'm not too anxious to take the top cover off.

Thanks for your replies.

BEWARE: Trouble with any glue repair = might hold at first, then fail two months later when you're leaning over a railing to see a whale.

Repairing with jb weld may make future internal repairs very difficult.

I'll probably not worry about fixing it, since it seems to be much more difficult than its worth to me. A wrist strap attached to the remaining stud would be just fine. It's not like this camera weighs a ton.
