Pentax Film SLR Repair Resources

Several months ago, Paul Gatineau of Advance Camera of Portland indicated his intent to retire. Paul is an excellent repair person and his expertise and skill will be missed. To ensure continuity, he has trained two people as his replacements with every indication that Advance Camera will continue to be one of the more reliable resources for Pentax film camera repair. This piece of news along with other reports of long-standing repair icons associated with multiple brands either passing away or retiring has resulted in some uncertainty regarding service for film cameras and for Pentax cameras in particular.

Eric Hendrickson (Pentax Camera Repair | pentaxs.com) has long been recommended by users on this site as perhaps the best Pentax repair and service resource for those in North America. Without casting doubt on that role, Eric is getting on in years and good alternatives should be identified. Hence the reason for this thread.

I wish to note, upfront, my deep appreciation and respect for Eric. I would suggest that respect for his role here be maintained even as we seek to broaden the scope of available resources.

General criteria for recommendation here should include:
  • Firsthand experience with successful Pentax camera repair
  • Reasonable turnaround time
  • Reasonable rates including evaluation and shipping fees
  • Formal training with focus on Pentax product is a plus. Apprentice under a master is even better!
Suggestions for resources outside the United States will be celebrated and graciously received.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Steve,

I know you specified "Film" but what about non-warranty repairs for dSLRs too?

I'll be watching with interest for recommendations in Australia.

I know there are techs here who will work on Pentax, but I don't know of any who specialise in Pentax, or even have specific training for the brand...

Blue Moon is about as hip as it gets! Mike Knight has been at Blue Moon for some time now and I would not hesitate to send them work.

Had a very good experience with Jennifer at Advance Camera. She said they have 'plenty' of LX parts, for reference.

Harrow Technical in the UK - They are a Pentax specialist but they just did some work on an OM1 of mine to get the meter running again and recalibrate its shutter. They were fast and efficient and relatively inexpensive for work on an OM-1. I will certainly be sending them my KX for a full on CLA in due course.

Harrow Technical closed last year. I believe that Robin the owner is still doing some work from home.
