K1000 featured in (UK) Channel 4 series "Chimerica".

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum. I was just watching the first episode of the new series "Chimerica". The lead character is a photographer, and the first six minutes heavily feature a K1000, being used in 1989 (weird year for that model, but hey, those things still work flawlessly today, so why not). Six minutes in, and it's 2016, with the guy having moved on to a Canon DSLR. Typical

FWIW, one could buy a assembled-in-Hong-Kong (parts from Japan) new in 1989, so the model was not too anachronistic. The lens was probably more so (I can't make out the model...Pentax-A 70-210/4?...Pentax-M 75-150/4?).

I was using three K1000 bodies in 1989 (and getting paid for it), so I'd say it was still a current camera. Two were all-Japanese and one was assembled in Hong Kong, and I didn't notice any meaningful difference apart from the newer Hong Kong version having a slightly brighter viewfinder.

According to my source the K1000 was built until 1997 and I remember asking for the price of a new one in 1996 in Chinatown, where several shops still offered it.
Buying one in 1989 should have been no problem then.

When I saw the lens the M 4.0/200 came to my mind first. I would rule out the 70-150 mm as it has a 49 mm filter size and from the photo I would guess 52 or 58 mm.

But how could he do that? Canon, really? I mean, he should have earned enough money to buy a Nikon then, shouldn't he?

You could buy a K1000 in just about any departnent stire in the US in '89...mine was bought in '87...

Still have the camera, the store is long gone...

I remember the day they stopped selling K-1000s. I needed replacements for my high school photography program and I was reduced to searching pawn shops, checking the buy/sell papers etc.

The K1000 was the last fully manual K mount camera, right? Even Cosina and Mamiya had stopped to produce those. Did you succeed in keeping up the the program with manual cameras?

I thought Vivitar sold a manual K mount camera into the early 2000s... at least I seem to recall ready availability, even if they were no longer made...

Apparently the Chinese company that made the last of the official K1000s held on to the tooling after Pentax finally killed off the model, and continued to make it under the name Mingca MC K1000 (and other brands). Surely somebody here on the forum must have managed to get hold of one of those, even if only for the curiosity factor?

No, not the last. Cosina continued making K-mount versions of their manual exposure body up until just a few years ago and still do for Nikon.

Funny, I never realised the k1000's production continued for so long. I somehow always assumed they died out when the M-series was introduced.

The lens is a something-to-200mm zoom. I can make out "Asahi Optical co." and "200mm", and the guy does some trombone zooming (oh, I miss that) in the scenes. Edit: I think that narrows it down to this one (the M series is slightly different). I also noticed he packs what looks like a lens brochure or a manual. The art director obviously has a good eye for detail...
