My son-in-law uses it. He says germs can't get on it if it is less than 5 seconds.By the same rule, it takes about 7 minutes for light to travel here from the sun, so I guess anything under 7 minutes should be safe for film.

With 110 (or 126) cartridge film only the exposed frame in the center would be ruined.
Were that film unexposed and still viable it would be worth as much as the camera!

mine only seems to land butter-side down if there's carpet or dirt/mud under it...

Wouldn't the backing paper reduce a significant amount of the light hitting the film? I've never shot 110, so genuinely curious...

Back in the day when I was a regular 110 user (still got it but hardly used at all) I occasionally had to get a film processed without it being finished.

So I just opened up the camera to see something like the OP's picture, sent the film off and got back what I expected - 21 or 22 pictures and the rest either unexposed or wildly over exposed..

The film was wholly contained in the cassette with only an images worth exposed in a gap in the plastic.
In this circumstance you would certainly lose the frame by the gap but all others would be fine.

As long as the cassette has not been lifted up, the film is going to be fine. If it has been lifted up, that one frame will be fogged and depending on ambient light the previous frame may have some light fogging.

Yes, you're right, most of it will be fine. But toast usually lands with the jam side down.
