plastic film can - dumb question

So... dumb question:

Aside from giving me a place to collect coins, what good is the little plastic can?

Does it improve light protection, even on the translucent ones? Maybe for Cinestill films?

I've always kept my film in them until shooting, and often before developing. Am i just wasting my time / space?

Thanks,

Anthony

Hello,

They keep moisture and dust away but I don't think the translucent one provides any additional light protection. I recently had a situation where they saved all my film as the bag was flooded in the fridge. All film was intact and dry.
I also use them as containers for cleaning chemicals (alcohol, white vinegar, Windex, Fantastik, etc.) to reduce the risk of spills in my workbench.
And they look cool and nostalgic...

Thanks,

They're great little air/water tight containers for small parts, seeds etc.. If you bulk load film reuse them to hold the film cassettes.

If you dis-assemble a lens you needs lots of these to keep the screws in

As pschlute says, great for holding the screws for the things you take apart. The more things you take apart, the more film cans you will need.

Travelling a lot as I do, I always carry two of those cute little 35mm film containers with me - one is filled with ibuprofen tablets, and the other filled with paracetamol tablets! 😁

I also use them for pills while traveling and sometimes spices for backpack cooking.

One day I needed to replace a felt sticky on one of the dining room chairs but I was out of replacements. Rather than scratch the hardwood floor, I slipped a plastic film canister over the end of the chair leg. Problem solved until I got to the hardware store. I keep bags of these canisters around since they are so useful.

They're very popular for "micro caches" in geo-caching

They also make good cat toys. Easy to bat around.

I discard mine and put the film in a sealed plastic box in the refrigerator, removing the can makes more room for film in the box.

Yet despite this there always seem to be a few floating around my apartment somehow.

The cap on the translucent ones used by Fuji makes a perfect cap for the 40 limited hood. Much easier to put on and off and less worry if you lose one (as long as you have spares)
