The "Joys" of Old Cameras

Just bought my first Pentax. A K1000 that I found at a thrift store for $20. It seemed to work perfectly fine mechanically once I got the old less than pliable film out of it. I think that's why it was only $20, sounded awful when you tried to advance the film. Took it into my local camera repair place for a good cleaning/oiling etc and a once over before I started using it. They just called to say it needs $100 in repairs for new light seels and a couple of springs on top of the cleaning and oiling. Oh well. Such is life. At least I'll know its all good to go once I get it back in about 10 days.

Sounds about right. Any such camera now will need this kind of CLA and repair to get to perfect working condition...

Not surprised about that cost as long as they have done a good job.

Enjoy that bright viewfinder (even the K-1 not that bright)!

Good on ya. $120 for a completely refreshed K1000 is absolutely reasonable, and under normal conditions it will be another 20 (likely more) years until it needs anything further. You're sorted.

Yeah. Starting with the 23102 Spotmatic, Pentax knew they had a good design and ran with it.

I still have a Pentax K-1000. It is a sturdy/reliable camera.

It’s probably good for another 30 years

It’s nice to shoot with a refreshed camera...

Yup, that's what I like to call the "Vintage Desirability Paradox"... the older and more desirable a vintage item becomes, the greater the probability it will require servicing, repair and/or restoration - and thus, in some folks' eyes, negating the desirability I collect older Soviet lenses, so... welcome to my world

EDIT: As others have indicated, it's worth servicing good older gear. It will likely serve you well for a long time to come

That's still less than what a k1000 costs in ok condition but with no cla. Sounds like a good find to me, after getting my km cla-ed it's a big difference in how the film lever advances.

So, what kind of film are you planning to put in your "new" camera? I used to be partial to Kodachrome myself, but they don't make that anymore.

I bought 10 rolls of Tri-X. Seems like a good place to start.
