Which Colour Film?

What kinda Colour Film do you guys use? i wanna have some more general purpose film. I'm going to NYC next month and thinking of grabbing a stash of Fuji 400H because it's $4 a roll at BH

Also interested at which ISO 800 film is the best. Superia 800 is around $3 a roll and Portra 800 and Fuji 800Z is about $6 a roll. is there a significant jump in quality?

I've looked through a lot of flickr photos but it's hard to judge because of variables from processing / scanning. any help would be appreciated

I like 400H, haven't tried the 800 speed films. In general I tend to use the Fuji as it is cheaper at B&H.

The former is considered "consumer" film and the latter is considered "pro" film, i usually go with the pro film as it's at it's optimum life and should be exposed and processed asap, pro film is also bought in "batches" where it's necessary to have consistency from roll to roll when CC is being done; the consumer versions can be left in camera if you're not going to shoot the whole roll and process right away. All that said, for general photography not intended for commercial use, optimum saturation isn't necessary so most will choose the "consumer" version.

I like 800asa (press versions) myself as i try to use as little/no flash as possible and i'm usually using a slow zoom. The grain structure is very tight depending on how well lit the scene is.

I love Fuji Superia 800. I grab it often for snapshots, street shooting and general pictorials. I like the grain -- it's not obtrusive, but it is present. It's got a random and organic grain structure, similar to older 400 speed film or black & white. In fact, Superia 800 converts very nicely to black & white after you scan it.

If you are shooting people, go for the Portra 800. I always keep a couple of rolls of Portra NC around (usually 400) in case I need to shoot people/portraits. Kodak knows how to make people look good, and Portra holds highlights and shadows like nothing else I've seen.

For REAL colour, shooting landscapes and the like, my favourite is Ektachrome E100VS. It delivers amazing blues and yellows, really saturated and beautiful. I recently tried Kodak's UC100 to see if a C41 (negative) film could offer the same look, and I found it lacking. But I'm looking forward to trying the new Kodak Ektar 100.

I shot Superia 800 for my indoor equine work in the early 00's.

Decent film grain not to bad. I tried some 1600 and although a bit grainy was not to bad.

Later i settled in on Reala.

thanks for the comments

i prefer higher speeds just because i have shaky hands and gives me more flexibility. i'll probably grab an ND filter for when it's too bright. i'll have my K100D as backup anyways so that can handle anything else that happens

Has anyone tried the new Koday Ektar 100 yet? I was tempted to order 4 or 5 rolls today, but decided to hold off.

Don't know if it is available where you are, but I love DNP Centuria 200.

Very economically priced. I pay something like $2 per 36exp. roll and buy it in 10 packs.

this DNP stuff looks like it's a Japan Only thing
but Superia is really cheap and available in most places. i think i'm gonna haul back a huge stash of film when i go to NYC.

What is this Profoto?

Your link has the tech specs, but if you go through Kodak's front page, this film isn't listed anywhere.

Is this an offshore rebrand of UC100? If so, has it also been replaced by Ektar?
