Hugo Studio leatherette samples

Hello,

I always try to rescue and reuse as much as possible of the original parts of the cameras I restore. Not different to my other hobbies where I am a "Factory Stock guy". You may recall I had to put a big effort to rescue the original leatherette on a recent Spotmatic. At some point I thought it was not going to survive so I started looking for alternatives. Most camera recover companies are been affected by the pandemic. Aki-Asahi can not ship out from Japan, and some others did not reply to my inquiries. I was suggested to check Hugo Studio and they seem to have a great selection. I ordered some samples and here they are:
(you only have one guess as to what is my favorite color)

From Left to right:
Genuine Leather Moroccan blue
Recycled Leather Vintage Blue
Genuine Leather Angus blue (small grain)

Here they are in a sample K2:

Genuine Leather Moroccan blue

Recycled Leather Vintage Blue

Genuine Leather Angus blue (small grain)

Darn it I like them all!
And that is only a sample of blues. If I order a sample of browns and tans I'll be lost!

Which one do you like? This is a matter of very personal taste so there is no right or wrong answer.

Thanks,

Hi @ismaelg,

Like you, I am always on the lookout for leather patches that I can use for cameras. I've found surprising sources in second-hand shops: an old zippered business portfolio that has a thin leather cover (CAD $3 IIRC); a leather bound notebook ($5) ; and a ladies' purse ($8, sufficient leather for 3-4 cameras).

As for your K2, I like all three samples, but would favour the third one -- the Angus blue. I think the subtle colour goes well with the camera.

But, as you say, tastes and preferences are personal. I tend to prefer muted colours, but I re-skinned an Olympus 35RC rangefinder in a bright blue leather similar to your Moroccan Blue. I sold it on eBay, and the buyer was thrilled with it.

Yup, I'm usually looking around for suitable donors like old car seat covers.

HA! From my Spotmatic SPIIa restoration thread:

"Then I asked my wife if she had any black or blue purse, leather or vinyl, she was throwing away.
You had to see her face! It was worth a million!
That was another dead end (but funny)."

Thanks,

That's a dangerous question, I can't believe you got by without having to buy her a purse.

You are going to replace the leatherette with real leather, that's awesome. I would go for Moroccan or Angus.

The recycled vintage looks nice and also the angus one is nice, for me it would be tough to call between those two. I think if a gun were held to my head I would pick the Angus, or maybe the vingage, no definitely the angus maybe.

I like the Angus blue best, but the recycled vintage blue is a close second - and given it's a recycled product, I'd probably go with that if the quality is good

I guess that it would come down to what you want to achieve. If you wanted everyone for a mile around to notice your camera instantly, then go with the Moroccan blue..

If you want camara people to look and see "hey, that guy is shooting film", and then do a double take and say "hey, he had the leatherette replaced with dark blue, thats cool!" Then I would go with the Vintage blue.

Hello,

Thank you all for the comments! Just to clarify, this K2 is a non-working unit as an example. It was just the nearest body within reach for the picture. Not decided yet what body to do, if any.

Thanks,
