Pentax MZ50 rewinding problem

I recently got a Pentax MZ50. Managed to shoot a full roll with it, then rewound it, and put in a new one. This is where the problem started. Whenever i put in a new roll, it forwards to frame 1 (completely normal) but then immediately rewinds the entire roll into the cannister again.

Does anyone know what the problem is and is there a way to fix this?

More than likely it is the pinion gear cracked and slipping on the motor. This is related to the mirror lockup problem on the MZ series. If this is the case the fix is to replace the plastic gear with a brass one. There are many threads on where to obtain the gear and how to replace it. The process is fairly involved requiring the proper tools and patience.
