But there is much more to see in Elko than Casinos. You can start with our beautiful Courthouse, preferably just as a visitor.



The pioneers rolled through Nevada on the way to California in the 1840s and 50s but the train was crucial to actually settling Nevada. This one was purposely left behind in a city park when the tracks were moved.

Log cabins are rarely this nice but this was an example that was brought into Elko from an outlying ranch so that it would be preserved for the future. Back in the day it was a Stage Stop, Restaurant and Hotel and was known as Sherman's Station.

Of course this is all most people ever see of Nevada, even if they do get here. What ever happens to pass in front of the windshield of their cars as they race down the Freeway at 80 miles per hour is the limit of their sightseeing. Pretty boring.



But if you take a little time to get off the Freeway you might see this,

Thanks to you for shipping the camera before the long weekend got started.

The rolls of Efke and Adox film are off to the lab for developing. No hardener for the fixer and the emulsion is very soft without it. Oh well, we'll have to wait for those rolls to get back to see what's on them.

Today's pictures are on Kodak BW400CN film but Wally World's developing did not work out as well as hoped. The best of the lot are up now but much of it turned out too dark.

BTW, the shutter gremlin does appear to be temperature dependent. It was around 50 degrees Fahrenheit outside again today, and whenever the camera was outdoors very long the shutter quit working properly. It does remain open like it is on a timer because those negatives are seriously over exposed. When the camera warmed up in the Jeep for awhile it started working properly again.

Anyway, more to come tomorrow, good Lord willing and the crick don't rise!

Its day 4...and time for the Daily Report from the SV.



Today was a challenge for the SV's poor shutter and there were many rest periods under the heater vent with an occasional journey outdoors.



But, accompanied by her trusty companion, the K2, she persevered.



The views were lovely and traveling slowly through the paths of snow she explored new country.



There were times when it felt almost as if she were right on the hills of Jedediah Smith or John Colter searching for the elusive beaver.



But in the midst of the beautiful country, care was needed as well. Steps away from the tranquility of the beaver's pond comes the rushing waterfalls (use your imagination, they are a bit frozen this time of year.)



The Sightseeing Screwmount is resting her aching bones. It may be a good day to rest indoors tomorrow in anticipation of a busy day on Monday.

As for the shutter issues...what you describe sounds like my experience, though I don't remember the remedy I used at the time. I think, perhaps, that a trip to Eric might be in order. I am willing to contribute $ to the fix if it comes to that.

We spent the entire day working indoors today, and the shutter does seem to work better at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. But there were still 4 different hang ups throughout the day. I have also noted that sometimes, even when the shutter fires all the way, it seems to partially hang up as it travels across the shutter gate. See example frame.


As you can see from this frame taken a couple of days ago, the shutter seems to start as it should and the exposure on the left side of the frame is good. But, as the shutter progresses to the right (or left since I think this is actually upside down inside the camera) it begins to slow down until the right side of the picture is over-exposed to the point of being dark.

IMHO a trip to Eric would do wonders and I will certainly be willing to pay my share to give this wonderful camera the TLC she deserves.

This shows shutter "capping" where the second (closing) curtain moves faster than the first (opening) curtain and catches up (closing the gap between the curtains) before completing the frame. Since it happens more in the cold, it is likely the lubricants stiffening and slowing the first curtain, rather than a spring tension problem.

A CLA with Eric is certainly called for. The old lube needs to be cleaned out before re-lubing and adjusting.

A question for the group. Do you believe that there is any chance of damaging the camera by continuing to use it? As you can certainly tell, I am an amateur at this and though I am certainly enjoying my time with this camera, I have no desire to cause any lasting damage.

I will discontinue using it at this point until the group, or better yet, the owner, weighs in. I have also sent Blue a PM.

Pioneer, really enjoying the photos from Nevada and the spinning top shot is a treat. I'm impressed with how fast you hit the ground running and sorry to hear the Sightseer's shutter is playing up on your leg of the tour. I had read Stevebrot's and Ratmagiclady's posts about shutter issues earlier in the thread, but didn't experience any of them, so I figured things had sorted themselves out. I think most of us here on this thread would be more than willing to kick a few bucks to getting the Sightseer's issues seen to if a side-trip to Eric is deemed necessary. I'll keep checking the thread for news on the Sightseer's status.

The shutter capping shouldn't cause damage. Since it affects primarily faster shutter speeds (where the "slit" between the curtains is smaller) you should still get pretty good results with slower speeds - say 1/60 and slower. So this is a time to try indoors "available light" photography the old-fashioned way. Back when normal film speeds were 32 to 100 we learned the ways to hold a camera steady at speeds down to 1/8 sec and still get a good percentage of shots. I did a lot of that with my first H1a Pentax when it was new.

That is great news TomB_tx. A lot of the images captured indoors the other day turned out better than the outdoor images. So more indoor captures for the remainder of my tour. At least until it is settled on where the Sightseer should travel next.
