Will ME focus screen fit in an MZ-S, answer: YES

so i took apart my Pentax Super Program (which i'm sure shares its mechanical parts with all the other Super A, ME, etc etc lines.

the focusing screen in those is not interchangable, but removable (2 screws)

which then drop down the holder swing, and inside is a metal plate to which the focus screen is glued on. (the metal plate holds 3 alignment screws, which is rather neat)

i took my MZ-S and poped out the screen and did a visual comparison, sizes seemed to be okay.

i took the Super Program screen out of its metal case and scrapped off the glue (this is the point of no return), cleaned it, and put it inside the MZ-S

it is about 1-2% smaller in width and length than the MZ-S screen, but otherwise after some poking i got it to fit in, and closed the lid.

first time i put it in upside down, i knew something was wrong when it would confirm focus on infinity distance subjects with the focus turned only half way.

after i fliped it, it focused correctly, and autofocus was now true, (altho not as correct as the split prisim would dictate)

once i go through a roll we'll see how accurate it really is.

and either way, i am now out of a Pentax Super Program, so if anyone wants one for parts (as it now lacks a focusing screen) PM me i'll sell it to you cheap.

The MZ-S was the last Pentax professional 35mm film camera body.
Didn't they offer accessory focusing screens made just for it ?

my instruction booklet lists 2 screens, GF-60 and GG-60, neither split prisim.

either way, i have no clue where to even buy these things. I email pentax to ask them about a few rubber plugs for the MZ-S, still havent gotten a response.

How I wish Katzeye really did screens for film SLRs. I certainly would want my K SLRs to have split-focus screens.

after succesfully running 6 rolls through the camera, this conversion works and the focus is good (wether its bang on or not is hard to tell, no focus chart tests yet)

but here is jsut a random photo

i wanted to focus on the horse shoe at F1.4 with a 50mm, and well, it did!

so go ahead and find a cheap old camera if you want your MZ-S with a split prisim

I want to do something like this for my KX. But I'd probably use a junker K1000SE as a donor. Or any junker MF body, really.

Actually there are plenty of third party split focusing screens available for K1000, and they cost less than 30 bucks each including shipping

Hmm, there used be quite some selling on eBay, but can't find any now Some ebay sellers in China have been selling split screens for Pentax dSLR cameras which were cut from some OEM split screens originally made for K1000 cameras. Like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110317645411

Maybe you can contact the seller and ask for the original K1000 screen instead the one they are selling? Some guy here at the forum bought this screen for their K10D/K20D cameras and seems to be pretty happy w/ the results:
