From all reports you are correct regarding the Spotmatic and 1.5v batteries. For people seeking mercury battery replacements for other cameras, you might want to look into the C.R.I.S. adapter. It is a voltage step-down device and is available to work with a number of cameras:

Hey, all right! Looks like someone's finally making one that'll go into the Canonets, as well as the old FTs and such.
(others I've seen out there were too thick for the former.) There's a happy thing

Jon Goodman emailed me and informed me he sells a similar device called a 'Tridot' adapter. I found a reference on Ebay HERE. He is trustworthy, I've bought stuff from him before. If you don't want to do the Ebay thing you can purchase from him directly - or so he says in his email.

Thanks everyone for all the replies - I am on the right path now.

Cool. And, I'd rather support this guy for putting all that useful stuff on the Web. I have a couple of Canon FT's which I suspect have parts for a good meter between them, and an FTbn which deserves better shutter service than I can manage here. This'll make that easier.
