Either that or they were still using all Japanese parts in Hong Kong at that point.

I just purchased 14 K1000 (not 12) units from the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) in Montreal, QC in incredible condition and thought it would be helpful to share some data before I dump them on ebay. When I saw the different variations I wondered what was up so I looked them up and so far this is the best source of info I have found.
I noticed #5 Serial number: 6656709 had some different features then the others which seemed a little odd. Lack of The Asahi Optical logo on prism housing, lack of Asahi name above Pentax name on prism housing, and the Split screen with microprism collar. Even though it does not have the "Asahi name and such, its top is still metal. One other thing I noticed is that the "plastic" bodies have a white "X" on the hot shoe mount, where the "metal" bodies have the Orange "X". This 6656709 also has the White "X"

Also I'm not sure if it was mentioned but the Top dial and film rewind are very different between some being plastic and others metal. Also # 5652972, 6524769, 6524667, 6604019 shutter release has a unique bulge between the frame counter and speed dial.

Co engraved on back side: yes Top plate: metal Bottom plate: metal Battery cover: threads Manufactured: None Location of manufacturing info: There was a "Made in Hong Kong" sticker stuck on bottom, but the camera is not engraved like that. Nor does it have "Made in Japan" on it. BUT, it has all the right logos and screws, all metal parts typical for a Japanese K1000 camera, so it might be a Japan model re-stickered for Hong Kong distribution? Either that or they were still using all Japanese parts in Hong Kong at that point. Screen: regular Weight: Heavy Year of original purchase: Unknown, flea market find. Came with a 50MM 1:2 M lens and looks to be in excellent condition.
