This lens came with a Pentax SMC-M 50mm, f/2 lens. I believe that the husband of the lady I bought this from was the original owner. This lens would put the original manufacture/purchase date sometime in the early eighties, as that is when the M-series cameras/lenses were in production.

I see another difference that no one else may have noticed: the collar around the rewind crank.

If you look at the pictures posted by notsowise above, you'll notice that the part of the top plate around the rewind crank is chrome and stepped and apparently an integral part of the body, where the part I'm accustomed to seeing (and depicted here on Bojidar Dimitrov's excellent website) are painted black the same as the cap of the film counter and shutter speed dial and one smooth, relatively shallow slope. It's an extra piece that fits onto the top plate. My guess is that the type shown in notsowise's picture is a later modification to reduce cost, whereas the version in the second picture is the earlier version.

edit: Looking at it again, it seems that the difference I noticed seems to be a consequence of having a plastic top plate, as the K1000 posted by notsowise has a plastic top plate.

Yes, on earlier models the black piece you're discussing was metal. It was later changed to a lightweight plastic.

I recently purchased two SEs in good shape to replace some parts of an older brown SE (all metal) I've been fixing up. The two newer SEs had the AOCO logo stamped in the top plate, but the black piece was plastic, along with quite a few other parts that are metal in the older brown one. There were other changes made too, to simplify the design and reduce cost. There are benefits though, it was much easier to disassemble the newer bodies due to some of these updated parts.
