New variation found!

Heads up, gang, there's a new feature of K1000s that we should be aware of.

CSSLDR over at the "How Many K1000's" thread, and the thread that started this all, has an interesting camera:

First of all, notice that while the serial number is engraved on the top plate à la Spotmatic and K-series-other-than-K1000, "Japan" does not appear on the back top plate of the camera.

And if you'll look here, between the rewind knob and the prism housing, notice the small raised area towards the back of the camera. This is precisely where the battery check button is located on the KX, and an identical bump appears on the KM.

This is most likely some sort of transitional body, made in Japan.

If your K1000 has a similar bump, it should be mentioned here.

Here's a photo of a camera with a top serial number, the bump and Japan.

That one is serial #7551580. I also had #7728223, top serial number, bump but no Japan. Both of these are listed in my previous post. All those cameras were from my extensive eBay trading days and long ago sold.

It appears so far that the "bump" coincides with the serial number being engraved on the top plate. There may or may not be "Japan" engraved next to Asahi Opt. Co. on the back side of the top plate on bodies with the bump.

My interpretation is that they moved the production away from Japan during the first production run ("with the bump") and they placed a sticker with Hong Kong on the bottom plate - most of those cameras have since lost that sticker, though. Next production run was a top plate without a serial number (but still with Asahi Opt. Co. engraved on the back of the top plate) and with the serial number stamped into the bottom plate, probably including a sticker with Hong Kong which again, most of us have lost.

But there is also a "Japan" sticker, and I saw a photo of one here on the forum once. And it was on a camera with the serial number on the bottom. The thread was from several months ago.

At this rate it doesn't seem like we'll ever REALLY get dates of production for each K1000 variant...

- It has the red X on the flash shoe that one poster mentioned.
- It was packaged in a kit with an M50/2 having serial number 8717961 with no mention of Japan.
